Impacts of Global Warming on North Carolina's Coastal Economy

June 21, 2007

A scientific study was undertaken by researchers at four North Carolina universities to consider three aspects of the state's coastal economy and their vulnerability to a changing climate including: the impacts of sea-level rise on the coastal real estate market, the impacts of sea-level rise on coastal recreation and tourism, and the impacts of stronger tropical storms and hurricanes on business activity. The study used a range of moderate  assumptions, not best- or worst-case scenarios. This brief summary brochure is designed to present the main findings of the study for the benefit of the public and policy makers.

National Security and the Threat of Climate Change

April 1, 2007

This strategic assessment report articulates the concept of climate change acting as a "threat multiplier" for instability in some of the most volatile regions of the world, and identifies key challenges that must be planned for now if they are to be met effectively in the future. The specific questions addressed in this report are: 1) What conditions are climate changes likely to produce around the world that would represent security risks to the United States. 2) What are the ways in which these conditions may affect America's national security interests.

Potential Climate Change Impacts on Marine Resources of the Northeastern United States

2007

This report synthesizes an assessment of potential changes in marine ecosystems off the northeastern United States in response to projected climate and emission scenarios, with a focus on temperature effects on living marine resources. It reviews likely impacts on the northeast continental shelf, and highlights potential effects on the distribution and abundance of the American lobster and Atlantic cod to illustrate the range of possible impacts throughout the region.

Louisiana's Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast - Integrated Ecosystem Restoration and Hurricane Protection

2007

The 2007 Comprehensive Master Plan establishes priorities for coastal protection in Louisiana, presenting a series of recommended hurricane protection and coastal restoration measures. Maps and explanations of the measures, as well as a management strategy for implementing them are also provided. While emphasizing sustainability of ecosystems, flood protection, and communities, this plan proposes integrated flood control projects and coastal restoration initiatives for the long-term sustainability of  both human and natural communities.

Climate Change Impacts on Water for Agriculture in California: A Case Study in the Sacramento Valley

March 2006

This study presents an application of the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) system for California's Sacramento River Basin. The WEAP modeling system was used to evaluate the impact of four future climate scenarios on agricultural water management in the region, and to investigate whether water management adaptation could reduce potential impacts. This paper demonstrates how internalizing adaptation in a model that includes both the hydrologic and water management conditions associated with climate change can help assess potential tradeoffs in multi-objective water management systems.
