In 2013, Norfolk, Virginia updated its general plan by adopting plaNorfolk 2030. Among other items, plaNorfolk 2030 accounts for the city’s increased awareness of environmental vulnerabilities caused by sea-level rise, in conjunction with soil subsidence, and how flooding risks can be mitigated through land use planning. The plan informed the Norfolk 2100 plan, adopted in 2016, and the city’s updated zoning ordinance in 2018, which aims to enhance floodplain and coastal resiliency and incentive development in upland areas.

In 2013, the District Department of the Environment (now D. C. Department of Energy and Environment, or DOEE) released an amended Rule on Stormwater Management and Soil Erosion and Sediment Control to require that major development and redevelopment projects incorporate additional measures to retain stormwater and reduce runoff. The District offers compliance flexibility by allowing for some off-site retention, the ability for developers to pay an in-lieu fee, or the option to buy stormwater retention credits.

A flood mitigation and habitat restoration project led by the North Coast Land Conservancy (NCLC) and funded by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) removed a levee built in the 1960s and reestablished the Necanicum River floodplain, mitigating flooding of Highway 101.

Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) encouraged Sandy-affected communities to rebuild with climate change in mind through the Rebuild by Design competition. Assembly Bill 296, the “Cool Pavements Research and Implementation Act,” was approved by California Governor Jerry Brown on September 27, 2012. AB 296 calls upon the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to develop a standard specification for sustainable or "cool" pavements that can be used to mitigate urban heat islands.

Developed by the Center for Planning Excellence (CPEX), the Louisiana Coastal Land Use Toolkit contains development standards that are designed to support hazard mitigation and natural resource protection in the coastal areas of Louisiana. The Toolkit offers a customizable regulatory framework for land use and development, in particular for those communities facing coastal and stormwater flooding. The Toolkit includes model zoning and subdivision codes that can be used to build more resilient coastal communities that are adaptive to these climate impacts and others, by adopting sustainable development and Smart Growth principles.

The City of Austin, Texas adopted the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan in 2012 and established “sustainability” as the central policy direction of the 30-year plan. This report shares the results of a new study from the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Emmett Center on Climate Change and the Environment at UCLA School of Law, on the many benefits of green roofs and cool roofs for communities in southern California. Some of those benefits are quantified, including building cooling energy savings, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and, for green roofs, stormwater volume reduction. Policy recommendations to achieve these benefits are provided as well.
