Preparing for Tomorrow's High Tide: Final Recommendations for Preparing Delaware for Sea Level Rise

September 2013

These recommendations, formally released in September 2013, were developed by Delaware’s Sea Level Rise Advisory Committee and by staff of the Delaware Coastal Programs section of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Fifty-five recommendations were developed for adapting to sea level rise in the state, which target the 16 vulnerable resources noted of high or moderate concern in Delaware’s 2012 Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment. These recommendations focus on building the necessary capacity for Delaware agencies, local governments, businesses and individuals to plan for and put into place strategies for responding to sea level rise.

Chicago DOT - Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Policies and Guidelines

July 2013

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) issued these guidelines (“Guidelines”) to require the implementation of sustainability best practices (environmental and social) into all transportation infrastructure projects, with metrics to ensure that projects are designed to be resilient to the long-term impacts of climate change. The Guidelines include two components: Volume I outlines the city’s sustainability goals and the process for integrating those goals into urban infrastructure design, construction, and maintenance; Volume 2 provides specific strategies, references, and resources to help project managers and engineers incorporate sustainability principles into specific projects.

Coastal Climate Resilience: Designing for Flood Risk

June 2013

Designing for Flood Risk provides key design principles to guide flood resistant construction in urban areas. Recommendations are given for regulations and individual project design to incorporate the distinct needs of higher-density urban environments in the design of new buildings in flood zones. This report has also identified several key proposed changes to New York City’s zoning that will promote practical, flood-resistant buildings that may differ from earlier, less resilient construction, but are sensitive to the existing context and heritage of neighborhoods.

Understanding the Adaptation Provisions of the Sandy Disaster Relief Appropriations Act

May 24, 2013

Disaster relief funding presents an opportunity for state and local governments to rebuild in a manner that anticipates and responds to future changes in the climate. In most cases, programs funded through disaster relief appropriations, such as the Sandy Relief Act, provide administering agencies with enough authority to prepare for climate changes during the rebuilding process.
