The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held its First National Expert and Stakeholder Workshop on Water Infrastructure Sustainability and Adaptation to Climate Change on January 6-7, 2009, in Arlington, Virginia. Sponsored by the EPA Office of Water and Office of Research and Development, the workshop was attended by more than 130 invited experts and stakeholders from the federal, research, utility, engineering, academic, and NGO sectors. The workshop included several plenary sessions and focused on two major topics: 1) Climate Change Impacts on Hydrology and Water Resource Management, and 2) Adaptive Management and Engineering: Information and Tools.

The Summer Sprout Program in Cleveland, Ohio is a partnership between the City and Ohio State University that helps communities establish and maintain thriving neighborhood garden spaces and provides educational opportunities to develop community gardening experts. The program was first initiated in 1976 and grew in 1977 to include a partnership with Ohio State University Extension, Cuyahoga County (OSUECC) to include educational components. The City of Cleveland Land Bank makes vacant city-owned lots available for community gardening uses and the program provides seeds, soil testing, tilling services, and other materials and services to help establish gardens and keep them running.

The Business Resiliency Initiative (BRI) was launched in the Sacramento Capital Region of California to increase awareness and preparedness for continuity risks faced by small and medium businesses. The Initiative aims to minimize the impacts of an economic crisis potentially caused by unforeseen disaster - recognizing the increase in frequency and severity of extreme weather events and climate change related impacts such as fire, flood, drought and storms. The project is built around designing an effective regional resiliency framework that can be replicated across the country.

Rainscaping Iowa is a statewide campaign promoting infiltration based storm water management practices that result in the improvement and protection of Iowa's soil and water resources. The program is a collaboration among several state and local agencies in Iowa and is dedicated to educating the public and training professionals in infiltration-based stormwater management. Rainscaping Iowa is funded through a variety of state and local sources, including the state Department of Transportation’s Living Roadway Trust, along with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Department of Agricultural and Land Stewardship, Department of Economic Development, the Iowa Storm Water Education Program, and the Polk Soil and Water Conservation District.
