Organization
Since 1993 the Sierra Nevada Alliance has been protecting and restoring Sierra lands, water, wildlife, and communities. Their mission is to protect and restore the natural resources of the Sierra Nevada for future generations while promoting sustainable communities. The organization is an alliance of over one hundred conservation groups that are based or work in the Sierra Nevada region, spanning the entire 400 mile mountain range. The Sierra Nevada Alliance is working with conservation representatives, resource managers and community leaders to ensure they have cutting-edge tools to adapt resource plans and projects and address change in ways that protect and restore Sierra waters, lands, wildlife and rural communities.

The Institute's community-based approach emphasizes collaboration, civil dialogue, sound information, local knowledge, practical solutions and big-picture thinking.

The Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center is one of nine regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CASCs) under the Department of the Interior (DOI) managed by the U. S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Climate Adaptation Science Center. The mission of the Centers and National CASC is to "deliver science to help fish, wildlife, water, land, and people adapt to a changing climate. " CASCs provide the tools that managers need to develop and implement strategies that address the impacts of climate change on natural and cultural resources.

The Southwest Fisheries Science Center is the research arm of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service in the Southwest Region. Center scientists conduct biological, economic, and oceanographic research on marine resources throughout the Pacific Ocean and in the Southern Ocean off Antarctica, to ensure that these populations remain healthy and at sustainable levels. Responsibilities include maintaining healthy fish stocks for commercial, recreational and subsistence fishing; conserving and recovering populations of protected species; sustaining ecosystem services; and coordinating with domestic and international organizations to implement and monitor fishery agreements and treaties.

The Western Wildland Environmental Threat Assessment Center (WWETAC) is a unit of the Pacific Northwest Research Station. The Center was created to predict, detect, and assess existing and potential environmental threats to western wildlands. Information will be developed and shared about forest impacts such as invasive plants, potential insect outbreaks, the appearance of invasive insect threats, the appearance of new pathogens (such as sudden oak death), and other threats. There are many WWETAC climate change related research projects, impact assessments, modeling tools, short courses, as well as affiliated workshops available on their website.

The Pacific Southwest (PSW) Research Station represents the research and development branch of the U. S. Forest Service in the states of California and Hawaii and the U. S. affiliated Pacific Islands. Its mission is to develop and communicate science needed to sustain forest ecosystems and their benefits to society. The PSW Research Station plays a leadership role in climate change and greenhouse gas science at national and international levels. Research of PSW scientists focuses on assessing climates, evaluating ecosystem responses, promoting approaches to sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, and developing adaptation strategies to manage natural resources in the face of changing climates.

The USGS California Water Science Center brings many capabilities and tools to the understanding, management and protection of California's water and other natural resources. This center conducts long-term monitoring of streamflow and water quality; develops new sampling, analytical, and interpretive methods to assess groundwater quality; studies the geology of groundwater systems to help managers protect and optimize supplies; devises new computer models that can play a key role in everything from managing surface and groundwater supplies, to assessing the impact of climate change on individual watersheds; and conducts multi-disciplinary ecosystem and watershed research, including large-scale studies in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and San Francisco Bay.

Established in 2007, the University of Southern California (USC) Program for Environmental and Regional Equity (PERE) is a research unit situated within the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. PERE conducts research and facilitates discussions on issues of environmental justice, regional inclusion, and social movement building. PERE seeks to conduct research that is relevant to public policy concerns, that is rapidly responsive to the immediate needs of community partners, and that reaches directly-affected communities that most need to be engaged in the discussion.

University of Southern California Sea Grant (USC Sea Grant) supports projects addressing the issues and opportunities of Los Angeles and other metropolitan areas near, using, and benefiting from the sea. USC Sea Grant funds research on the critical issues associated with the influence of massive cities on the sea, promotes connections between scientists and the policy-makers who must craft solutions, and broadly distributes information to the electorate through public education outreach efforts.

Formally established in 2000, the Western Forestry Leadership Coalition is a partnership between state and federal government forestry leaders in the west. The Coalition is comprised of 34 members including 23 State members, also known as the Council of Western State Foresters, and 11 USDA Forest Service members, including 7 Regional Foresters, 3 USFS Research Station Directors, and a USFS Forest Products Lab Director. The purpose of the Coalition is to address critical resource issues across ownerships and jurisdictions.
