From the Risky Business Project, “Heat in the Heartland” details how extreme heat from unmitigated climate change could transform the Midwest's communities and economy. This assessment defines the range of potential economic consequences on agriculture and businesses, as well as discusses the related impacts on labor productivity, livestock, energy use, public health, crime, fresh water supply and tourism. The report concludes that the most severe risks can still be avoided through early investments in resilience and immediate action to mitigate global warming.

The Engineering Department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) produced the Climate Resilience Design Guidelines (guidelines) to ensure that climate-related risks are factored into design and management of agency facilities and infrastructure. In particular, the guidelines focus on future sea-level rise projections and provide a methodology for incorporating projections into design criteria while allowing project teams flexibility to design cost-effective solutions. PANYNJ project architects and engineers are to use the guidelines to assess the vulnerability of projects to future impacts and to address those impacts when designing port authority infrastructure and buildings.

The U.S. Department of Transportation conducted the Gulf Coast Study to better understand the range of potential climate change impacts on transportation infrastructure and identify possible strategies for adapting infrastructure. It was conducted in two major phases, starting with Phase 1 (completed in 2008), and ending with the completion of Phase 2 in 2015.

Planning for Resilient Communities is a planning assistance program in Michigan developed by the non-profit Land Information Access Association (LIAA) with numerous statewide partners. The program is helping citizens, local leaders and public officials plan communities that are more resilient to climate variability, extreme weather events and global economic challenges. The overall project mission is to foster and support community‐wide planning efforts that lead to the adoption of significant revisions to existing master plans to promote community resilience.

In July 2014 President Obama launched the Build America Investment Initiative to increase infrastructure investment and spur economic growth. In January 2015, as part of that Initiative, the U. S. Treasury Department and Department of Transportation have issued a set of Recommendations of the Build America Investment Initiative Interagency Working Group, with a focus on expanding public-private collaboration in U. S. infrastructure development and financing. Some of the priority strategic opportunities addressed in the report include increasing infrastructure resilience where new infrastructure investments present opportunities to “increase the nation’s climate preparedness and ecosystem resilience by incorporating projected future climate conditions into their placement and design.

The 2014 Boston Greenovate Climate Action Plan describes Boston’s progress towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 25% by 2020 and 80% by 2050, and preparing for the impacts of climate change. There is a marked focus on adaptive strategies and solutions and less emphasis on climate impacts, across five sections of the Plan: Neighborhoods, Large Buildings and Institutions, Transportation, Climate Preparedness, and 80x50 (Boston’s 80 percent by 2050 GHG reduction goal).

This US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) study, released in January 2015, assesses flood risk from coastal storms for the North Atlantic coast from Virginia to Maine – the states and communities affected by Hurricane Sandy – and recommends strategies for reducing those flood risks. The study was designed to help Sandy-affected states and communities better understand how flood risks will change as a result of climate change and sea-level rise. It captures the latest scientific information on sea-level rise, and provides state, local, and tribal governments with tools to help them prepare for changing flood risks and apply the lessons learned from the study.

The U. S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) issued revised guidelines in 2015 that outline the federal requirements and guidance for writing a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS). The CEDS guidelines now require regional economic development agencies to consider how climate change will affect economic development and to include strategies for increasing economic resilience. The guidelines acknowledge that a region’s long-term economic resilience will be defined by its ability to quickly recover from economic shocks and that climate change will increasingly cause economic disruptions.
