Primary Care: Enhancing Health Care Resilience for a Changing Climate, from the U. S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS), assesses the current climate and weather related risks for health care infrastructure, and proposes some best practices for building resilience to climate change. The HHS climate resilience guide is intended to address a wide range of health care facility vulnerabilities. It spans risks related to buildings, utilities and infrastructure, including IT infrastructure, supply chain issues, the needs of staff, and the role of the healthcare facility in the broader community.

The County of Kaua'i, Hawaii passed a Shoreline Setback Ordinance (effective December 5, 2014) that strengthens the county's shoreline setback requirements. The purpose of the updated bill is to "protect life and property, ensure the longevity and integrity of Kauai’s coastal and beach resources and strengthen current shoreline setback requirements by incorporating science-based erosion rates established in the Kauai Coastal Erosion Study, and current coastal hazard mitigation best practices and strategies.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy launched a Climate Education and Literacy Initiative in December 2014 to help connect American students and citizens with the best-available, science-based information about climate change. The Initiative is designed to increase student learning opportunities; equip educators with science-based information and resources; enhance climate-related professional development and training; and engage citizens through place-based and informal climate education.

Prepared by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the Virginia Coastal Policy Clinic at William and Mary School of Law, this report offers an assessment of Virginia’s climate mitigation and adaptation progress since the release of its first Climate Action Plan in 2008. The report analyzes that plan and two subsequent adaptation focused reports, finding that a lack of coordination has lead to “disjointed” efforts, and offers recommendations for more streamlined climate action moving forward.

From the Rhode Island state government, this plan outlines the state’s long term vision for economic development. The majority of this plan is dedicated to general economic development concerns such as income, job growth, and regulations, but it also contains a substantial section focused on climate adaptation (Goal 5, pgs. 97-115). Rising air and water temperatures, increasing precipitation, extreme weather, and sea level rise were identified as significant climate threats to Rhode Island’s economy.

In 2014 the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) completed a study which assessed the vulnerability of the state’s transportation infrastructure to climate change and natural disasters. The Federal Highway Administration sponsored the report as part of a its Climate Change Resilience Pilot Program which assessed climate impacts for a number of states' transportation systems, and developed feasible adaptation strategies. As part of Oregon’s case study, ODOT, whose Adaptation Work Group provided guidance throughout the process, developed new sea level rise maps, collected baseline data, and used a case study to learn from existing coastal hazard mitigation projects - all of which are detailed in the report.

To prevent water from the Potomac and Anacostia rivers from flooding downtown Washington, D. C. , the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is improving the levee system along the north side of the National Mall, running from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument. A levee system was originally erected to protect the District in 1939, following a major flood event in 1936. This project will improve the levee system through a series of upgrades: a permanent closure at 23rd Street and Fort McNair, and the installation of a more robust removable wall, which will provide flood protection but also allow for traffic flow on 17th street between flood events.

Federal agencies released updated adaptation and sustainability plans on October 31, 2014. The updated plans build and improve upon the first phase of plans released in 2013. For the first time, the plans include discussion of how agencies can leverage existing federal programs to better support and remove barriers to state, local, and tribal adaptation efforts.

This report, adopted by the City of Aspen, is an update to the City's climate change impact assessment adopted in 2006. The report details the range of impacts that the City is likely to experience as a result of climate change, including: longer summertime warm periods, earlier spring snowmelt, more precipitation as rain and not snow, longer dry periods, and increased frequency of heavy downpour events. These changes are anticipated to increase wildfire risk, put increased pressure on water supply, and economically impact ski resorts and other winter and summer time recreational businesses. The report also details adaptation strategies for each of six key sectors.
