This report explores the ways in which climate change, health, and equity are connected, and identifies many opportunities and recommendations for climate adaptation in the public health sector. From the Public Health Institute (PHI), the report analyzes the relationships between the social determinants of health, health inequities, and climate impacts - with an eye on how vulnerable populations overall are facing greater exposure. A number of examples are given of successful projects in which communities and public health organizations are taking action on climate change, health solutions, and social equity.

From the Arizona State University and the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) the Extreme Weather, Climate and Health Profile Report aims to address and plan for the Arizona’s climate-related health impacts. Through the report, the state initiated a climate and health adaptation planning process known as BRACE (Building Resilience Against Climate Effects), a framework developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide local health officials with a mechanism for addressing and adapting to climate-related public health effects.

This one-page Equity Checklist was designed for planners and funders to ensure the leadership of disadvantaged communities in projects that impact them. This checklist was designed to serve as a purposefully simple framework to a) identify vulnerable populations, b) think through the equity implications of their work, and c) promote respectful collaborations with community groups. Funders can use the checklist as criteria for their grant giving, and agencies can use it as a helpful guide to plan projects.

What Cities Should Do: A Guide to Resilient Power Planning is a series of guidelines and best practices for cities and towns preparing for widespread power outages from severe weather events. According to the authors, cities should have resilient power plans for critical public and private facilities in order to protect their most vulnerable citizens - but few cities have focused on risks and mitigation strategies associated with extended grid power outages for critical assets. This paper calls for a systematic approach to protect critical facilities with resilient power solutions, including solar photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage, combined heat-and-power (CHP), and fuel cells systems.

At the recommendation of the Louisville Metro Tree Advisory Commission, a countywide urban tree canopy (UTC) study was conducted in Louisville, Kentucky. The study was designed to determine the historic and current amount and location of tree cover, quantify the benefits, set realistic goals to expand the tree canopy, and make recommendations for achieving these goals.
