Maine Flood Resilience Checklist

The Maine Flood Resilience Checklist is a non-regulatory self-assessment tool that allows coastal and inland communities of all sizes to evaluate their vulnerability to flooding and sea level rise, examine areas where current policy and action could use improvements to better address the vulnerabilities, and identify specific strategies and actions to enhance flood resilience. The Checklist is designed to be completed through an interdepartmental, facilitated discussion between decision-makers and key municipal planning, management, emergency and enforcement staff.

Wells-Goodfellow Neighborhood Green Space Project - St. Louis, Missouri

The Green City Coalition (Coalition) -- a partnership between the Metropolitan Sewer District, the City of St. Louis, Missouri Department of Conservation, and the St. Louis Development Corporation -- is leading the conversion of approximately 9 acres of vacant land into greenspace for stormwater management and recreation purposes. The Wells Goodfellow neighborhood in St. Louis has the highest proportion of vacant land in the city, and also struggles with combined sewer overflows, basement backups, and street flooding that affect the Bissell Point Watershed broadly.

Flooding Threatens Public Schools Across the Country: Infrastructure analysis evaluates county-level flood risk

From the Pew Charitable Trusts and ICF, this analysis of flooding risk was conducted for public elementary and secondary schools in all 50 states. Three county-level indicators were developed to assess flooding risk including: a school’s location within a designated flood zone, the percentage of a school’s neighborhood (as represented by ZIP code) located within a flood zone, and the number of historical flood-related federal disaster declarations in that county.

Robust Stormwater Management in the Pittsburgh Region

From the RAND Corporation - a global nonprofit research organization - this report addresses stormwater management and sewer overflow issues in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania metropolitan region within Allegheny County. The research behind this project provided the baseline science needed first to address this system future, in the face of climate change. This research is designed to support improved stormwater, wastewater, and climate resilience planning in the Pittsburgh region - and offers a robust framework for other cities facing these issues.

FEMA Community Rating System

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary program that incentivizes participants to take community floodplain management practices that reduce flood risk and exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). As a result, CRS jurisdictions can earn discounts on NFIP flood insurance premiums for their residents and gain additional benefits to build overall community resilience. The NFIP offers reduced flood insurance to all properties in communities that comply with federally designated minimum standards for floodplain management.

The RainReady Approach: Linking Municipalities and Residents to Manage Urban Flooding with Distributed Green and Grey Infrastructure

This paper presents approaches to residential flood mitigation through the RainReady program, developed by the non-profit Center for Neighborhood Technology. Urban flood mitigation programs may be designed in a number of ways, as illustrated by two case studies that each offer unique outcomes for flood risk analysis and reduction; community participation; and distributed stormwater infrastructure design.

Climate Resilient and Equitable Water Systems Capital Scan

My RainReady is a free, online tool that helps building owners diagnose the flooding risks of single-family homes and small apartment buildings, and find the best means of reducing the risk of damage from urban flooding. After the user answers a series of guided questions, My RainReady provides a tailored flood mitigation and preparedness measures, such as landscaping and construction improvements. My RainReady provides a customized report that suggests a mix of home maintenance and DIY improvements, landscaping and construction options, and flood preparedness actions.

FEMA Community Rating System (CRS) User Groups
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary program that incentivizes floodplain management practices that reduce local flood risk. The CRS program supports communities in mitigating flood hazards by reducing flood insurance premiums for residents within jurisdictions that implement solutions that go beyond the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)’s minimum floodplain management standards. Municipal and county governments participating, or considering participation, in the CRS program can join existing or start new CRS User Groups to achieve benefits for flood mitigation through regional coordination and networking.

Putting Green Infrastructure on Private Property in New York City
