Potential for Shoreline Changes Due to Sea-Level Rise Along the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Region

2007

In 2007, thirteen scientists convened for a two-day meeting to exchange  information and develop a consensus opinion on potential future coastal changes for the mid-Atlantic coast in response to sea-level rise. This 2007 report is the result of this workshop, providing an overview of how sea level rise could impact mid-Atlantic coast landforms, from New York to Virginia. Four different scenarios for sea level rise were considered and applied to specific areas of the Atlantic coast: a) the long-term sea-level rise rate observed over the 20th century would persist over the 21st century; b) the 20th century rate would increase by 2 mm/yr; c) the 20th century rate would increase by 7 mm/yr; and d) sea-level would rise by 2 m over the next few hundred years.

Vulnerability of New Jersey's Coastal Habitats to Sea Level Rise

This report is the product of a study determining which developed areas in coastal New Jersey are vulnerable to sea-level rise in ways that could negatively impact sandy beach and wetland habitats. It is intended to be used in a way that can provide information for coastal management and development decisions.

Future Sea Level Rise and the New Jersey Coast

June 2005

This study presents an assessment of potential impacts of sea level rise on the New Jersey coast.   Using historical flood data, digital elevation models, and climate change projections, the authors found that sea level rise will submerge 1-3% of coastal lands, and 6. 5-9% of coastal land will be affected by periodic flooding.   The study looks at Cape May Point as a case study for potential impacts on socioeconomic and natural resources that would be relevant to other coastal areas.   Finally, the authors broadly identify a gradual retreat strategy for adaptation.

National Assessment of Coastal Vulnerability to Sea-Level Rise: Preliminary Results for the Atlantic Coast

1999

One of three national assessments of U. S. coastal regions conducted in the late 1990's, this assessment focused on the Atlantic coastline, while the other two focused on the Gulf Coast and Pacific coastlines. The overall goal of these studies was to identify those portions of the U. S. coastal regions at risk and the nature of that risk (e. g. , inundation, erosion, etc. ). The long-term goal of this study is to predict future coastal changes with a degree of certainty useful for coastal management, following an approach similar to that used to map national seismic and volcanic hazards.

New Jersey State Climatologist

The Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist (ONJSC) serves as the focal point for activities pertaining to the climate of the Garden State. The ONJSC is responsible for collecting and archiving climate data, maintaining an active research program pertaining to New Jersey climate and, through various outreach programs, providing climate education and information to the citizens of New Jersey. ONJSC highlights include the NJ Weather and Climate Network, arguably the most spatially dense mesonet in the country, media interviews often exceeding 300 annually, research on topics ranging from urban climates to insect pest management to climate change, and contributions to university, state and national programs related to issues such as drought, emergency management and homeland security.

The New Jersey Climate Adaptation Alliance is a network of policymakers, public and private sector practitioners, academics, and NGO and business leaders designed to build climate change preparedness capacity in New Jersey. The Alliance is facilitated by Rutgers University.

New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium

The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium (NJSGC) serves the state and the region by developing programs designed to resolve coastal issues, develop marine technology, formulate science-based policy, and improve science literacy among its citizens.   Member Institutions of the NJSGC are colleges, universities and other groups with expertise in marine, coastal and/or estuarine science and an interest in New Jersey’s marine, coastal and/or estuarine affairs. Collectively the group works to advance knowledge and wise-utilization of New Jersey’s marine and coastal resources and make a positive impact on marine and coastal policy throughout the region.
