Adapting to Rising Tides - Addressing Social Vulnerability and Equity in Climate Change Adaptation Planning in the San Francisco Bay Area

Designed to inform the Adapting to Rising Tides project (ART) being led by the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, the purpose of the white paper is to integrate social equity into adaptation planning for sea level rise and storm events. The report describes a social vulnerability assessment completed for the study area and the results; presents case studies which integrate equity into adaptation planning; and provides decision support tools and recommendations to inform social equity and coastal planning for the San Francisco Bay Area of California.

City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin All Hazards Mitigation Plan
June 2012
In 2012, this All Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted by the City of Milwaukee in compliance with requirements of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Although the plan does not have in-depth treatment of climate change, it does acknowledge that future planning should utilize estimates of how climate change will effect precipitation in the region (at p. 63).

Louisiana's 2012 Coastal Master Plan

Louisiana's 2012 Coastal Master Plan, also titled 'Louisiana's Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast,' is a landmark 50-year, $50 billion blueprint for a sustainable coast. This plan, prepared by the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), was passed unanimously by the Louisiana legislature in May 2012. While building off previous plans, the 2012 Coastal Master Plan is the most comprehensive to date, offering solutions to Louisiana’s coastal environmental and engineering challenges.

SPUR Ocean Beach Master Plan for San Francisco – Strategies for Great Highway

Developed by the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR), the Ocean Beach Master Plan (OBMP) provides a long-term strategy for responding to current and future sea-level rise impacts along the 3. 5-mile stretch of San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, and provides recommendations for adapting the Great Highway, which runs adjacent to the beach. The strategy focuses on the protection and relocation of transportation infrastructure, including: (1) rerouting the southern portion of the Great Highway; (2) protecting and restoring the shoreline and beach; (3) reducing the width of the Great Highway; (4) repairing seaside dunes; (5) facilitating faster travel between Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach; and (6) improving bicycle paths and sidewalks near Ocean Beach.

Progress and Challenges in Urban Climate Adaptation Planning: Results of a Global Survey

This report presents the results of a 40-question survey on local climate adaptation planning completed by 468 cities around the world. The survey questions addressed the perceptions of climate risk, the extent to which cities are conducting vulnerability assessments, the status of urban adaptation planning, the favored approaches to urban adaptation planning, and the challenges that cities have encountered in their adaptation planning efforts.

Arizona Wildlife Action Plan 2012-2022

Congress charged each state and territory with developing a Wildlife Action Plan in order to receive funds through the Wildlife Conservation and Restoration Program and the State Wildlife Grants Program. These proactive plans, known also as “Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategies,” assess the health of each state’s wildlife and habitats, identify the problems they face, and outline the actions that are needed to conserve them over the long term.

Ocean Beach, California Master Plan

The Ocean Beach Master Plan (OBMP) presents recommendations for the management and protection of Ocean Beach, and addresses the impact of sea level rise, the physical and ecological processes shaping the beach, and improved integration with its natural, recreational, and urban contexts.
