New York City Green Infrastructure Grant Program
2016
New York City’s Green Infrastructure Program is a multi-agency effort led by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The NYC DEP offers a green infrastructure grant program for private property owners in combined sewer areas of New York City. The program provides funding for green infrastructure projects that manage the first inch of rainfall, including blue roofs, rain gardens, green roofs, porous pavement and rainwater harvesting. Private property owners in combined sewer areas are eligible for the grants of up to $5 million.

Pennsylvania Disaster Planning for Historic Properties Initiative
2014-2018
In 2014, Pennsylvania was awarded $1. 5 million from the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act to help stabilize or repair historic properties damaged by Hurricane Sandy, and undertake disaster-related planning initiatives. The funding enabled the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office to assist select counties and the City of Philadelphia with prioritizing their communities’ historic properties and build protective measures into hazard mitigation plans for historic property considerations.

Under 1 Roof Initiative, San Antonio, Texas
2016
The Under 1 Roof Initiative is an example of local funding programs that create incentives for residents to retrofit vulnerable homes to prepare for climate change impacts like urban heat. In 2016, San Antonio launched the Under 1 Roof Initiative to replace old roofs with free, energy-efficient cool roofs. Under 1 Roof distributes funds through the city’s Neighborhood Housing Service (NHS) to replace the roofs of qualifying applicants, including the elderly, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and low-income residents. Under a partnership between the municipal utility and the city, households that do not qualify for direct funding from the NHS remain eligible to receive rebates for self-installed cool roofs. In 2018, San Antonio’s city council approved a $2.25 million budget to expand the Under 1 Roof Initiative to five other districts in the city.

Louisiana’s Strategic Adaptations for Future Environments
Louisiana’s Strategic Adaptations for Future Environment (LA SAFE) supplements Louisiana’s 2012 Coastal Master Plan by serving as a generalized framework for land use and community development along Louisiana’s coast. Recognizing that not all vulnerable areas can be protected from flood risks, the report outlines three different development strategies - Retreat, Retrofit, or Resettle. Based upon the expected flood inundation from a 100-year storm event over the next 50 years, the strategies respond to three typological zones: Retreat from areas projected to experience more than 14 feet of flood inundation; Retrofit places of economic and cultural value projected to experience between 3 and 14 feet of flood inundation; and Resettle to maximize underdeveloped areas and high-ground corridors that are projected to experience less than 3 feet of flood inundation.

Partners for Places Funding Program
2012
The Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities and the Urban Sustainability Director’s Network (USDN) co-founded the Partners for Places program (P4P). P4P is a matching grant program that supports initiatives with local government sustainability leaders and local funders to integrate climate preparedness, sustainability, and carbon reduction in U. S. and Canada communities. The fund grants up to $1,000,000 annually; and grants range between $25,000 and $150,000. A 1:1 match is required from local place-based foundations.

North Carolina Climate and Health Adaptation Plan
2016
The North Carolina Department of Health developed this Adaptation Plan as a part of the Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) framework. This report builds off of the previous North Carolina Climate and Health Profile Report by prioritizing and recommending options to avoid or mitigate the state’s climate-related health impacts. Air quality and respiratory diseases, along with heat-related deaths and illnesses, are North Carolina’s top climate-related health priorities. The purpose of this adaptation plan is to provide the department with information to identify and implement adaptation strategies for climate-related health impacts across the state.

DOT TIGER Grant Program
2016
The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Discretionary Grant program, administered by the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT), provided discretionary funding for investments in road, rail, transit and port projects. Since 2009, TIGER has provided nearly $4. 6 billion to 381 projects in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, including 134 projects to support rural and tribal communities. For FY 2016, $500 million was made available for transportation projects across the country under an eighth round of TIGER.

Delaware’s Green Infrastructure Primer, released in 2016, provides an overview of nature-based approaches that can mitigate stormwater runoff, flooding, erosion, and water and air pollution. The primer provides an introduction to green infrastructure, fact sheets regarding eight green infrastructure practices, three case studies showing examples of green infrastructure being used in Delaware, a discussion of larger-landscape-scale green infrastructure efforts, and suggested resources for more information.

Sacramento, California Leak Free Program
January 2016
The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities Leak Free program pays for leak repair in the homes of low-income Sacramento residents. Recipients of the service must be homeowners and must live in areas designated by the State of California as being a “Disadvantaged Community” (DAC). The characteristics of a DAC include poverty, high unemployment, air and water pollution, and the presence of hazardous wastes as well as high incidence of asthma and heart disease. Through this program, residents who may not have access to affordable plumbing can sign up for one house visit from a contracted plumber.
