Colorado Resiliency Resource Center
The Colorado Resiliency Resource Center is an innovative online platform that offers guidance on resilience for local government agencies, elected officials, community organizations, and members of the private sector. It is one way that Colorado’s Resiliency Office, housed within the state’s Department of Local Affairs “supports and helps empower Colorado communities” as they prepare for the effects of climate change. Information is classified into three sections related to understanding, planning, and taking action for resilience.

Statewide Efforts to Improve Water Resources Management in Alabama

State agencies and regional stakeholders in Alabama are in the process of creating a state water management plan to ensure sustainable management of Alabama’s water resources in the face of a growing population and increasing climatic variability. State-level actions include the formation of an interagency water-focused working group to lead the development of a state water planning process, an update to the state’s Drought Management Plan, and new cross-agency efforts to increase and consolidate water resources monitoring to inform decision-making. The Alabama Rivers Alliance and other regional stakeholders are simultaneously lobbying for a state water management plan that integrates adaptive management, protects water supply for both natural and human communities, and reflects the values and opinions of Alabama stakeholders.

Planning for Change in Chatham County, Georgia

Chatham County is vulnerable to sea level rise, flooding, and erosion. Increasing the ability of the county to adequately prepare for and recover from the impacts of climate change are important goals of the Chatham County Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission (MPC). These goals have expanded into ensuring that all areas of the county are preparing for climate change, including public works, fire departments, hospitals, board of educators, and county engineers. The MPC sees itself as a driver for sustainability and resilience for all sectors in Chatham County. As a result of a 2010 climate change planning workshop, community meetings, and surveys, the MPC released an updated comprehensive plan in 2016 to guide development decisions and promote resilience. An update (Plan2040) is in development, using guidance and lessons learned from the 2016 plan.

As climate exacerbated extreme weather events and natural disasters threaten operations and transportation assets, the Guide focuses on how to create resilient transit systems of all sizes.

Samish Indian Nation Climate Adaptation Planning Framework
December 2017
The Samish Indian Nation initiated a climate change adaptation process, by first developing an adaptation planning framework to identify the steps the tribe will take to prepare and strengthen resilience to the impacts of climate change. The framework addresses the process needed to assess vulnerabilities, develop resilience strategies, and implement an adaptation plan. The Samish people live on their ancestral lands in the Pacific Northwest, along the Salish Sea in Washington State, and are faced with extreme weather, sea level rise, flooding, erosion and other compounding impacts of climate change.

Washington Shoreline Master Program Handbook: Appendix A – Addressing Sea Level Rise in Shoreline Master Programs
December 2017 Revision
The Shoreline Master Programs Handbook, developed by Washington Department of Ecology, provides guidance to help local governments meet the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act (RCW 90.58) and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines (WAC 173-26, Part III). Appendix A of the Handbook directs planners on how to incorporate sea level rise planning into the broader framework of shoreline management planning.

Oregon 2017 Integrated Water Resources Strategy
December 2017
The 2017 edition of Oregon’s Integrated Water Resources Strategy builds on the state’s 2012 strategy and is aimed at predicting and meeting the state’s instream and out-of-stream water needs, both now and in the future. The updated version addresses climate change as a “cross-cutting issue” and illustrates the need for continuous monitoring of water resources as predictions based off of historical data becomes unpredictable because of climate change. The California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) developed this guidance document to support state agency planning and investment in the context of climate change - as directed by Executive Order B-30-15. The guidance provides state agencies with a process for determining how to integrate climate considerations into state planning and investment decisions. The guidance offers an introduction to climate risks and how to start incorporating them; some common analytical practices; and principles to guide decision making around climate adaptation, community resilience, and social equity.
