Minnesota GreenStep Cities
June 2010
GreenStep Cities is a state-wide voluntary program for Minnesota cities to assist in implementing sustainable best management practices. Managed by a public-private partnership, this free continuous improvement program provides technical assistance and recognition for cities that adopt best practices in sustainability and resilience. The GreenStep program identifies 29 best practices that cities can adopt to plan for climate impacts, increase energy efficiency and green and resilient buildings, foster green businesses and jobs, among other practices.

An Action Plan for Public Health: Initial Recommendations for Involving Public Health in Climate Change Policy

Public Health Law and Policy, a non-profit organization focused on building healthy communities in the U. S. , gathered a diverse group of more than 150 participants for a multi-disciplinary exchange of ideas and strategies with the goal of better engaging public health networks and agencies in climate change work. This Action Plan presents a synthesis of those recommendations and priorities. Although developed for the state of California's public health system, the recommendations are largely applicable to any state.

Weathering Climate Change: Framing Strategies to Minimize Impacts on Pennsylvania Ecosystems and Wildlife

As an initial effort to inform Pennsylvania’s climate adaptation planning process, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the Pennsylvania Game Commission and The Nature Conservancy interviewed stakeholders from state and federal natural resource management agencies, research institutions, and environmental non-profit organizations. An Assessment of Decision-Making Processes: The Feasibility of Incorporating Climate Change Information into Land Protection Planning (Final Report)

Because land protection decisions are long-term, hard to reverse, and resource intensive, these decisions are important to consider in the context of climate change. Climate change may directly affect the services intended for protection and parcel selection can exacerbate or ameliorate certain impacts. Therefore, when considering long-term acquisition strategies, land protection programs should be considering both the mitigation potential of land through carbon sequestration and the adaptation potential of the land for preserving wildlife migration routes, protecting water sources, and buffering infrastructure and development from storm events.

Adapting to Climate Change - A Call for Federal Leadership

This report discusses the federal government’s importance in mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change on the U. S. economy and domestic natural resources. This report presents analysis and recommendations for creating a National Adaptation Program in the U. S. federal government, including a suggested organizational structure and key federal roles. The recommended program has three major components: an Adaptation Strategic Planning Initiative, a National Climate Service, and an Adaptation Research Program.

Water SMART (Sustain and Manage America's Resources for Tomorrow) Program

The U. S. Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART (Sustain and Manage America's Resources for Tomorrow) program is working to achieve a sustainable water strategy to meet the Nation's water needs. WaterSMART allows all bureaus of the Department to work with States, Tribes, local governments, and non-governmental organizations to pursue a sustainable water supply for the Nation by establishing a framework to provide federal leadership and assistance on the efficient use of water, integrating water and energy policies to support the sustainable use of all natural resources, and coordinating the water conservation activities of the various Interior offices.

Green Technologies for Reducing Slope Erosion, Preliminary Investigation

As climate change alters precipitation patterns, departments of transportation will increasingly face the problem of slope failures. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) conducted this Preliminary Investigation to identify innovative strategies for reducing the risk of roadside slope erosion. They hope to implement the latest vegetative and soil-based solutions for reducing the volume of highway stormwater runoff on slopes and in water conveyance systems.
