The Eastern Shore of Virginia: Strategies for Adapting to Climate Change

This report is the result of a climate change adaptation project launched by the Nature Conservancy for the Eastern Shore of Virginia to quantify the current understanding of potential ecological effects due to climate change through an expert workshop, literature review and assessment of resource vulnerability using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data.

City of Chula Vista, California Climate Adaptation Plan
May 2011
In 2010, the City of Chula Vista's Climate Change Working Group (CCWG) evaluated the potential impacts from climate change on municipal infrastructure and services, and recommended strategies to adapt to these potential impacts. In October 2010, the CCWG presented 11 recommended Climate Adaptation Strategies (see Appendix A) to the City Council to address climate change vulnerabilities and solutions related to energy and water supplies, public health, wildfires, biodiversity, coastal resources, and the local economy.

The Benefits and Challenges of Green Roofs on Public and Commercial Buildings

From the United States General Services Administration, this report presents the costs, benefits, challenges, and opportunities of green roofs with a focus on the National Capital Region (Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area). The study finds that over a 50 year period the stormwater, energy, carbon dioxide equivalent, and community benefits of green roofs outweigh the costs associated with installation and maintenance.

Drought-Ready Communities - A Guide to Community Drought Preparedness

The Drought-Ready Communities pilot project culminated in 2010 with this "Guide to Community Drought Preparedness" that communities throughout the U.S. can use to understand and reduce their drought risk. The process outlined in the Guide is broad-based, recognizing that drought creates problems that go beyond the scope of which water suppliers alone can address.

PlaNYC 2030 - A Greener Greater New York

First released in 2007, PlaNYC was an unprecedented effort undertaken by New York City Mayor Bloomberg to prepare the city for one million more residents, strengthen the economy, combat climate change, and enhance the quality of life for all New Yorkers. The Plan brought together over 25 City agencies to work toward the vision of a greener, greater New York.

Federal Agency Climate Change Adaptation Planning: CEQ Implementing Instructions

From the White House Council on Environmental Quality, this set of 'Implementing Instructions' were issued to inform federal agencies on how to integrate climate change adaptation into their planning, operations, policies, and programs. The instructions are based on the recommendations from the Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force in its October 2010 Progress Report to the President, and authorized by Executive Order 13514, 'Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance'.

Coming Together for Clean Water: EPA's Strategy for Achieving Clean Water

The strategy outlines the challenges that were discussed at the 2010 Coming Together for Clean Water forum, describes the public participation process, and highlights the EPA’s priorities for achieving clean water goals.

Vision 2020: New York City Comprehensive Waterfront Plan

Prepared by the Department of City Planning of New York City, Vision 2020 is a comprehensive waterfront and waterway sustainability plan aimed at transforming the city's 520-mile shoreline with parks, industry, and housing, and capitalizing on its waterways to promote waterborne transportation, recreation, maritime activity, and natural habitats. This framework for the next decade is an outgrowth of Bloomberg's PlaNYC long-term sustainability blueprint issued in 2007. The plan establishes policies for the expanded use of NYC's waterways, or the “Blue Network,” for transportation, recreation, education, and for improving water quality.

Climate Change Adaptation Planning: A Handbook for Small Canadian Communities

Recognizing that climate change adaptation is particularly difficult for small communities, the Canadian Institute of Planners published this climate adaptation Handbook for small towns and cities. While it was designed for Canadian communities, the processes described are applicable in the U.S. context.
