Regulatory Aspects of Direct Potable Reuse in California

This paper, prepared for the National Water Research Institute, discusses the growing water demand in California and the need to implement new strategies to satisfy it, with a focus on direct potable use of water. The purpose of this paper is to identify issues that would need to be addressed by regulatory agencies and utilities in California interested in pursuing direct potable reuse as a viable option in the future.

Climate Change Preparation Planning on National Landscape Conservation System Lands

The National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) is a collection of BLM lands which are mandated to protect specific resources, including natural, cultural, geologic, scenic, scientific, and recreational resources, found within their boundaries. Several agencies, including the BLM and the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, are mandated by DOI Secretarial Order 3289 to "consider and analyze potential climate change impacts when undertaking long-range planning exercises, setting priorities for scientific research, developing multi-year management plans, and making major decisions about the potential use of resources under the Department's purview.

This site provides PDF files of individual state case studies pertaining to the economic and environmental costs of climate change. The studies were prepared by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and the Center for Integrative Environmental Research (CIER) at the University of Maryland. The reports summarize climatic changes affecting 12 states, their potential fiscal impact, and the effect that future changes in climate may have on state economies. The research highlights the importance of planning for the possible effects of climate change on state natural and economic resources and explores options for reducing these effects.

Western Governor's Association Wildlife Corridors Initiative

In February 2007 the Western Governors’ Association (WGA) unanimously approved policy resolution 07-01, “Protecting Wildlife Migration Corridors and Crucial Wildlife Habitat in the West. " To implement the resolution, the WGA launched the WGA Wildlife Corridors Initiative, a multi-state and collaborative effort that included six separate working groups, each of which was charged with developing findings and recommendations on various aspects of wildlife corridors and crucial habitat. These Working Groups are the Science Committee, Oil & Gas, Energy, Climate Change, Land Use, and Transportation Working Group.
