Climate Change and Water Management in South Florida

Developed by the Interdepartmental Climate Change Group of the South Florida Water Management District, this paper provides a high-level foundation for future discussions of the effects of global climate on water management planning and operations in South Florida. It focuses on the global concepts of climate change at the local level by providing an overview of how it may affect South Florida’s resources and the mission responsibilities of the South Florida Water Management District. The paper includes an initial vulnerability analysis of the potential impacts of climate change and sea level rise on water supply, flood control, coastal ecosystems, and regional water management infrastructure.

This document provides voluntary guidance that can be used by state fish and wildlife agencies to better incorporate current and expected impacts of climate change into Wildlife Action Plans. The report presents steps for developing a wildlife adaptation strategy, the process for revising state Wildlife Action Plans, and tools to support the planning and implementation process, including vulnerability assessments and monitoring. Relevant case studies are included in each chapter.

UK Highways Agency, Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Framework

This document is the United Kingdom Highways Agency's framework for developing adaptation plans for the agency and its corporate constituents. After providing an overview of the potential risks of climate change on the UK's infrastructure, the agency provides guidance on assessing risks, determining priorities, and identifying preferred options to address and manage these risks. The adaptation framework provides a platform for decision makers to examine their individual business areas, including standards, specifications, maintenance, and the development and operation of the Highways Agency network.

Virginia Strategy for Safeguarding Species of Greatest Conservation Need from the Effects of Climate Change

From the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Virginia Conservation Network, and the National Wildlife Federation, this report is to be appended to Virginia's Wildlife Action Plan. Massachusetts Climate Change Adaptation Advisory Committee: Potential Strategies

This set of subcommittee briefings to the Massachusetts Climate Change Adaptation Advisory Committee provides potential adaptation strategies for coastal zones and oceans, human health and welfare (including water quality), key infrastructure, local economy and government, natural resources and habitat, and land use. In addition to these issue-specific strategies, the report offers general strategies such as updated hazard mapping, increased financial support for adaptation programs, and revised regulatory and design requirements.

City of Portland and Multnomah County, Oregon Climate Action Plan 2009

October 2009

In 2007, Portland City Council and the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners adopted resolutions directing staff to design a strategy to reduce local carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050. This 2009 Climate Action Plan responds to that directive. It intends to guide future efforts by the City and County and provide an innovative framework for the region’s transition to a more prosperous, sustainable, and climate-stable future. An updated version of this plan was released in 2015.

5-Year Action Plan for Implementing the Strategic Plan for Responding to Accelerating Climate Change in the 21st Century (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service)

To address the impacts of climate change, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service developed a strategic plan, "Rising to the Urgent Challenges of a Changing Climate," (see separate entry) which establishes a basic framework from which the Service and their employees can work with the larger conservation community to help ensure the sustainability of fish, wildlife and their habitats.

Responding to Climate Change: Working Together to Conserve Land, Wildlife and Habitat

September 2009

On November 15, 2008, 10 organizations consisting of non-profits and Massachusetts state agencies sponsored a conference at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts. The conference, "Responding to Climate Change: Working Together to Conserve Land, Wildlife and Habitat," was the first of its kind in the Commonwealth and in the nation. The conference brought together nearly 200 conservation leaders from across 60 organizations, including scientists, land stewards, hunters, anglers, government officials, advocates, foundation officers, and policy-makers.

Potential for Adaptation to Climate Change in an Agricultural Landscape in the Central Valley of California - Final Report

August 2009

This case study is intended to build awareness about the urgent need to develop strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change in specific agricultural regions. Using a process that engaged local stakeholders, this report addresses planning issues at both the farm and landscape levels. While this study focused specifically on Yolo County, this approach to assessing mitigation and adaptation potential could be useful elsewhere.
