Climate Interactive, Milwaukee Green Infrastructure Scenarios Tool
Climate Interactive, a “climate change think tank” has created a Green Infrastructure Scenarios Tool (GIST) for Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that allows for scenario testing related green infrastructure investment and future precipitation scenarios. The simulation allows users to test investments into different types of infrastructure for managing stormwater, and supports exploration of different possible future rainfall patterns, to see how investments might turn out under various future climate conditions.

NOAA Coastal Flood Exposure Mapper

A RainReady Nation: Protecting American Homes and Businesses in a Changing Climate

Washington, DC Flood Levee System Improvements
December 2014
To prevent water from the Potomac and Anacostia rivers from flooding downtown Washington, D. C. , the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is improving the levee system along the north side of the National Mall, running from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument. A levee system was originally erected to protect the District in 1939, following a major flood event in 1936. This project will improve the levee system through a series of upgrades: a permanent closure at 23rd Street and Fort McNair, and the installation of a more robust removable wall, which will provide flood protection but also allow for traffic flow on 17th street between flood events.

The Challenge of Mitigating Virginia’s Flooding and Sea Level Rise Impacts

This report outlines potential flood risk within Hampton Roads, Virginia, finding nearly $431,000,000 in pending costs to fix flood-damaged structures. The study also found that, at current rates of hazard mitigation payments from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), it would take between 78-188 years to clear a backlog of flood-damaged property needs. Given this situation, Wetlands Watch suggests using revolving loan funds to meet the sea level rise adaptation needs in coastal Virginia.

Danish Road Directorate - Blue Spot Analysis

The Danish Road Directorate (DRD) developed a Blue Spot Analysis to identify roadways vulnerable to flooding under present conditions and future climate projections and to inform its climate change adaptation response. A “Blue Spot” is a section of road where there is both a high risk of flooding and significant consequences from flooding. Road flooding is the primary climate adaptation challenge for Denmark and is the focus of the DRD’s climate adaptation planning. The DRD’s strategy to adapt to road flooding is to manage flooding that occurs, improve roads when financially feasible, and to prevent climate-related impacts whenever possible.
