The County of Marin, California's “Game of Floods” is an interactive game on sea level rise climate adaptation for Marin and the San Francisco Bay Area. The game is a model for public engagement and education on coastal adaptation - with information on climate impacts and adaptation options, encouraging discussions on the benefits and tradeoffs of adaptation measures.

South Florida Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Pilot Project: Final Report

April 10, 2015

From 2013 to 2015, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sponsored climate resilience pilot studies by partnering with State Departments of Transportation and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs). The FHWA’s Climate Change Resilience Pilots were designed to conduct climate change and extreme weather vulnerability assessments of transportation infrastructure and to analyze options for adapting and improving resiliency. This report presents the results of the FHWA pilot study in the southeast Florida region of Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties.

North Carolina Sea Level Rise Assessment Report - 2015 Update

March 31, 2015

This report responds to a charge from the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission (CRC) specifying that sea level rise (SLR) projections be developed for a 30- year timeframe - and to the N. C. General Assembly Session Law 2012-202 (which prevented the CRC from taking any regulatory action before July 1, 2016).  Sea level is rising along the entire coast of North Carolina, and the variation in the extent of localized sea level rise and causes of variation are described. The report describes sea level rise dynamics, the use of tide gauges, future projections of SLR in North Carolina, and how to make sense of these predictions - in an approachable fashion.

Virginia SB 1443: comprehensive plan sea-level rise strategies

March 16, 2015

In March 2015, Governor McAuliffe signed Virginia legislation (SB 1443) to require all localities  in the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission region to incorporate consideration of projected sea-level rise and recurrent flooding in updates to local comprehensive plans and to develop strategies to combat risks from sea-level rise, beginning July 1, 2015.  The law directs the Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Department of Emergency Management, the Marine Resources Commission, Old Dominion University, and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to provide technical assistance to any locality in the region upon request.

Damariscotta, Maine Adaptation Planning Study: Downtown Waterfront Area

February 2015

The Town of Damariscotta is considered one of the most vulnerable communities on Maine’s coast for future sea level rise and storm surge. In 2014, Damariscotta received a Maine Coastal Resiliency Grant to study the effects of sea level rise and develop adaptation strategy options for protecting the town.  The report reviews both individual measures that building owners may take to floodproof their own buildings, as well as community level adaptations that the town could take to adapt to sea level rise.

Army Corps North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study – Main Report

January 2015

This US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) study, released in January 2015, assesses flood risk from coastal storms for the North Atlantic coast from Virginia to Maine – the states and communities affected by Hurricane Sandy – and recommends strategies for reducing those flood risks. The study was designed to help Sandy-affected states and communities better understand how flood risks will change as a result of climate change and sea-level rise.   It captures the latest scientific information on sea-level rise, and provides state, local, and tribal governments with tools to help them prepare for changing flood risks and apply the lessons learned from the study.

Capitol Corridor (CA) Sea-Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and 2014 Vision Plan Update

November 19, 2014

The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) conducted a sea-level rise vulnerability assessment for the corridor’s rail assets and is incorporating those findings into the agency’s Vision Plan, identifying sea-level rise as a critical issue in long-term planning and investments. The Capitol Corridor, which is managed but not owned by the CCJPA, serves as the primary public transportation connection between the Sacramento metropolitan area and the San Francisco Bay Area. Large stretches of the corridor run along waterfronts and through marshlands and other areas that will be increasingly vulnerable to inundation and flooding during storm events as sea levels rise.

Encroaching Tides: How Sea Level Rise and Tidal Flooding Threaten U.S. East and Gulf Coast Communities over the Next 30 Years

October 2014

This report from the Union of Concerned Scientists describes the threat of tidal flooding in the East Coast and Gulf regions and offers steps that communities can take to adapt. The report makes the case that tidal flooding, currently just considered a nuisance, could become a daily or weekly occurrence, redefining how and where people along the coast “live, work, play, and move through their daily lives. " Data was collected in 52 locations to provide projections for sea level rise and tidal flooding in the region until 2045.
