EPA: Enhancing Sustainable Communities With Green Infrastructure Guide

This report from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is subtitled A Guide to Help Communities Better Manage Stormwater While Achieving Other Environmental, Public Health, Social and Economic Benefits. The report summarizes green infrastructure approaches for stormwater, and the integration process into planning for and developing sustainable communities. The guide is designed to help stakeholders understand how green infrastructure can enhance their communities, and to develop a plan that can overcome technical, regulatory, financial, and institutional obstacles that can limit the implementation of green infrastructure.

Adapting to Climate Change and Variability Marquette, Michigan

This assessment outlines the climate concerns of the city of Marquette, Michigan - which is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula region. Marquette’s economy relies on tourism, timber, mining, health care, education, and high tech manufacturing. The city is already seeing climate impacts in Lake Superior’s warmer waters that has raised bacterial levels high enough to force Marquette to close a public beach. The plan drew on a series of public meetings and small group sessions where participants assessed strategies related to: Transportation, Tourism, Agriculture, Land Use, Forests, Natural Resources, and Public Health.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Strategic Agenda for green infrastructure outlines the EPA’s key objectives in supporting community level efforts to develop and incorporate green infrastructure. The strategy is designed to address climate change impacts. According to the EPA, “creating more resilient systems will become increasingly important in the face of climate change. As more intense weather events or dwindling water supplies stress the performance of the nation’s water infrastructure, green infrastructure offers an approach to increase resiliency and adaptability.

The American Society of Adaptation Professionals (ASAP) is an association that brings together the leading professionals from a variety of sectors working to increase climate resilience across the U.S. The Georgetown Climate Center and ASAP partnered to develop an ASAP member portal on the Clearinghouse designed to provide a one-stop-shop to help members find resources popular among other ASAP professionals, along with resources highlighted in ASAP newsletters, produced by ASAP members, or featured in ASAP webinars.

North Carolina Executive Order No. 305: An Order to Protect and Restore North Carolina’s Critical Natural and Working Lands

Signed by Governor Roy Cooper on February 12, 2024, Executive Order 305 sets the most ambitious environmental and restoration goals in North Carolina history. It notes that North Carolina is experiencing the impacts of climate change in the form of more intense and frequent hurricanes, extreme temperatures, flooding, droughts, sea level rise, and saltwater intrusion. The Order states that these impacts are endangering the people of North Carolina, are hurting the economy, and have caused over 250 billion dollars in damage in recent years.

Cleveland Climate Resiliency and Urban Opportunity Initiative
September 28, 2015
Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, in partnership with the University of Buffalo and the Cleveland Office of Sustainability, initiated a project in 2015 to improve climate resilience in Cleveland neighborhoods. The project seeks to take an asset-based approach to adaptation planning, building upon existing partnerships, programs, the work of community organizations and residents, and a large inventory of vacant land. With support from the Kresge Foundation, a team of trained Climate Ambassadors began work in four neighborhoods to recruit participants for community workshops and to identify projects, programs, policies, and future research.

New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium
The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium (NJSGC) serves the state and the region by developing programs designed to resolve coastal issues, develop marine technology, formulate science-based policy, and improve science literacy among its citizens. Member Institutions of the NJSGC are colleges, universities and other groups with expertise in marine, coastal and/or estuarine science and an interest in New Jersey’s marine, coastal and/or estuarine affairs. Collectively the group works to advance knowledge and wise-utilization of New Jersey’s marine and coastal resources and make a positive impact on marine and coastal policy throughout the region.

New York City Build it Back Program

The Build It Back Program assists homeowners, landlords, and tenants affected by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 within all five boroughs of New York City, New York by rebuilding homes damaged or destroyed by the hurricane. The City’s goal is to invest and create resilient neighborhoods through sustainable design, such as requiring new homes to be elevated above projected sea-level rise and flood heights. Registration for the program was announced on June 3, 2013, and as of the closing date for registration (October 31, 2013), the program received applications for more than 20,000 single‐family buildings; of which approximately 16,000 applicants completed the initial eligibility review.

Incorporating Climate Change into State Public Health Policy in Virginia

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is in the beginning stages of incorporating climate change impacts into its public health programs through its newly established Climate Change Committee (C-3). Other Virginia agencies and organizations are also incorporating public health considerations into climate actions.
