Case Study on The Sierra Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Partnership (Sierra CAMP)

This Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) case study on the Sierra Nevada Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Partnership (Sierra CAMP) explores how local governments in the 22-county rural Sierra-Nevada region of California are coordinating across jurisdictional boundaries to prepare for climate change. This case study describes how Sierra CAMP was formed and has organized its decision-making, what local governments and other stakeholders are involved in the collaborative, what roles it is playing to support climate action in the Sierra-Nevada region, how the collaborative is influencing state decisionmaking and broadening connections between rural and urban adaptation efforts, and how the collaborative is funding its activities.

Drought and Equity in California

Drought and Equity in California is the first statewide analysis of the impacts of the five-year and ongoing drought on California’s most vulnerable communities. Three major impacts of the drought are the focus of the report, including water supply shortages, drought charges and water affordability, and the drought impacts on salmon fisheries. The Pacific Institute finds that water shortages and price increases affected access to safe, affordable water for Californians, with the most severe impacts on several vulnerable populations.

DOI Secretarial Order No. 3343 - Drought and Climate Change, California's Water Supply
January 4, 2017
U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell issued a Secretarial Order on January 4, 2017 directing the Department of the Interior and its bureaus to take action to address the effects of drought and climate change on California’s water supply and imperiled wildlife. The order supports the State’s goals of providing a more reliable water supply for California and to protect, restore, and enhance the environmental quality of the Bay-Delta.

California Climate Change and Health Profile Reports
2017
The CalBRACE (California Building Resilience Against Climate Effects) Project of the California Department of Public Health (DPH) developed 58 Climate Change and Health Profile Reports – one for each county in the state. The reports outline climate projections for extreme heat, sea level rise, wildfires, drought and air quality, as well as climate related health risks and indicators for social vulnerability. Adaptation strategies are outlined for each county also, to address these public health impacts.

Climate Change and Health Vulnerability Indicators for California
2017
The Climate Change and Health Equity Program of the California Department of Public Health developed Climate Change and Health Vulnerability Indicators for California. The indicators can help communities and local decision makers to better understand the populations that are more at risk for climate change induced or exacerbated health impacts. DPH suggests that the indicators can be used to screen and prioritize public health action to increase resilience. There are 21 indicators, organized into three domains: environmental exposures, population sensitivity, and adaptive capacity.

Lessons in Regional Resilience: Case Studies on Regional Climate Collaboratives

The Georgetown Climate Center report, Lessons in Regional Resilience, documents lessons learned from regional climate collaboratives, which are bringing together local governments and other stakeholders to coordinate climate change initiatives at a regional level. This synthesis report shares lessons from each of the collaboratives in individual case studies, and offers insight to their goals, planning processes, and funding sources. The report is intended to help local governments consider models for coordinating at the regional level to facilitate planning and action to prepare for the impacts of climate change and draws on examples from six regional collaboratives from around the country.

The Our Coast, Our Future (OCOF) project provides online maps and tools of local sea level rise and storm vulnerability within the San Francisco Bay Area, California. OCOF has modelled coastal impacts such as water levels, wave heights, flooding, and erosion; and mapping infrastructure and ecosystem vulnerabilities at scales relevant to planning and management.

Cal-Adapt 2.0
2017
Cal-Adapt is a climate change geospatial data tool for California, that is developed and maintained by the University of California, Berkeley Geospatial Innovation Facility with funding and oversight by the California Energy Commission. Cal-Adapt offers localized climate change projections for the state produced by California's scientific and research community. The updated version, Cal-Adapt 2. 0, has been released with new, high-resolution climate projections, enhanced visualizations, and improved access to data.

A Greater LA: Climate Action Framework

A Greater LA: Climate Action Framework was developed by the Los Angeles Regional Collaborative for Climate Action and Sustainability (LARC) to help leaders in the LA region identify and implement the most promising and effective measures for reducing emissions and increasing resilience to climate change. It was designed to prioritize issues and actions that can have the most regional impact and that require more cross-county coordination.
