The Climate Gap: Inequalities in How Climate Change Hurts Americans and How to Close the Gap

This assessment and policy report argues that climate change has important justice and human right implications because poor neighborhoods and people of color will suffer more than other segments of the population, creating what they call “the climate gap”. Using data from California, the authors write about how vulnerable populations will be adversely affected by climate change, exacerbating current inequities. While the report includes policy recommendations for the whole nation, it is a reaction to public health, equity, and regulatory issues pertinent to The Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32) in California that was implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

The report describes some of the tools that can help maintain a healthy agricultural sector, reviews recent trends in the California agriculture, and addresses challenges such as climate change that will impose new difficulties for growers. The Executive Summary and the water conservation and efficiency assessment chapters offer adaptation policy recommendations.

USGCRP Global Climate Change Impacts in the US - Ecosystems

This report is one of seven sector-specific chapters from the United States Global Change Research Program's 2009 National Climate Assessment, "Global Climate Change Impacts in the U. S. " The 'Ecosystems' chapter presents current and projected impacts to ecosytems in the U. S. from climate change. Ecosystem processes, migration seasons, species range and distribution shifts, extinction, desertification, and ocean acidification among other impacts are fully described relative to the effects of climate change.

Effects of Climate Change on Florida's Ocean and Coastal Resources

The Florida Oceans and Coastal Council prepared this report in 2009 to provide a foundation for future discussions of the effects of global climate change on Florida's ocean and coastal resources, and to inform Floridians about the current state of scientific knowledge regarding climate change. The report provides a high-level overview of the impacts to infrastructure, human health and the economy, as well as key drivers such as increasing air temperatures, warming ocean temperatures, and sea level rise.

Impacts of Global Warming on Hurricane-Related Flooding in Corpus Christi, Texas
June 2009
An analysis of impacts to Corpus Christi, Texas was undertaken to help understand and quantify the potential impacts of global warming on coastal flooding and related damages. The city’s location on the Gulf of Mexico makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. If sea-level rise projections and the hurricane intensification scenarios used in this analysis are realized, significant increases in flood levels are projected, especially under higher emissions scenarios. This is projected to lead to major economic consequences resulting from increased property damage and displacement of families and businesses.

An Adaptation Portfolio for the United States Coastal and Marine Environment
June 2009
This report presents a suite of federal, state and local policy actions to enhance the resilience of human and natural systems to the effects of climate change and variability for marine and coastal environments. Strategies discussed include: investments in habitat restoration, permitting decisions under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the purchase of coastal lands, controls for reducing non-point and point source pollution upstream of intertidal estuaries, the inspection and prevention of invasive species, marine protected areas (MPAs), incentive‐based fishery management policies, and in general a better definition of rights to marine and coastal resources that creates stewardship incentives.

Adapting to Climate Change: The Public Policy Response - Public Infrastructure

Leveraging prior U. S. infrastructure assessments, this report synthesizes threats to and the needs of public infrastructure posed by climate change. Infrastructure asset types discussed include: wastewater and waterworks systems, electric power generation and transmission systems, communication networks, roads and rail networks, transit and transportation facilities and ports, and oil and gas pipelines and associated facilities. The adaptive capacity of these assets are reviewed, and options for enhancing adaptive capacity through public sector investments in physical, planning, and human resources are presented.

Agriculture and the Food System: Adaptation to Climate Change
