Building Public Support for Floodplain Management: Guidebook
February 2010
This document provides guidance to enable better communication by floodplain managers to community stakeholders in regard to changes in flooding conditions and regulations. This is a particularly challenging field because, as the authors explain, current (as of 2010) economic incentives created by the National Flood Insurance Program make mitigating hazards in flood-prone areas difficult. Consequently, the report explains how floodplain managers can better understand stakeholders' goals, explain flood hazards, provide explanations of new policies, and implement outreach and education programs.

NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program
2010
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Environmental and Climate Justice Program was created to educate and mobilize communities to address the disproportionate impact of climate change on communities of color in the United States and around the world. NAACP explains that race - even more than class - is the number one indicator for the placement of toxic facilities in this country; while communities of color and low income communities are often the hardest hit by climate change.

USFWS National Conservation Training Center (NCTC)
The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) provides training opportunities for FWS staff to increase their knowledge of climate science and climate change as they relate to resource management. NCTC also partners with others to bring field scientists and practitioners new learning opportunities in the form of on-line courses, workshops, and webinars. While some courses are specifically designed for Fish and Wildlife Service employees, most are relevant to any conservation professional.

EPA Local Government Climate Adaptation Training
This online training was developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to introduce local government decision-makers to the implications of climate change, the concept of climate adaptation, as well as provide examples of successful local government adaptive actions. Completing the online training video will take about 30 minutes.

The Coastal Climate Change Adaptation Project (CCCAP) is a program of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition. Oregon Shores is dedicated to preserving the natural communities, ecosystems and landscapes of the Oregon coast while conserving the public's access. NCSU Climate Change and Society Professional Science Master's Program
The Climate Change and Society Professional Science Master's (PSM) degree program at North Carolina State University (NCSU) is a multidisciplinary one year program of academic training in the emerging field of climate adaptation. The degree program is intended for students interested in careers in planning or policy and professionals working in government agencies or private sector firms concerned with any aspect of planning or setting policies affected by global climate change. The program provides the training for combining climate change science and climate-sensitive social-economic sector information - for the development of sound decisions for adaptation to and mitigation of climate change.
