The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is the collective body through which the three national academies work together to provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conduct other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions. The National Academies also encourage education and research, recognize outstanding contributions to knowledge, and increase public understanding in matters of science, engineering, and medicine. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) was established in 1863 by an Act of Congress, signed by President Lincoln, as a private, nongovernmental institution to advise the nation on issues related to science and technology.

Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council

In 1971, the Rhode Island General Assembly passed legislation that created the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC). The CRMC is a management agency with regulatory functions, tasked with continual planning and management of the coastal region and resources and with coordinating these tasks with local, state, and federal governments. Its primary responsibilities revolve around the preservation, protection, development, and restoration of Rhode Island's coastal areas through its comprehensive and integrated Special Area Management Plans (SAMPs).

San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC)

The Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of San Francisco Bay and to the encouragement of the Bay's responsible use.  BCDC was the first coastal protection agency created in the country in 1965 by the California state legislature and has permitting jurisdiction in the Bay, 100 feet inland of the shoreline band, and other specified waterways throughout the nine Bay Area counties, with commissioners represented by each of the nine counties.

The Forest Service (USFS) is an agency of the U. S. Department of Agriculture that manages public lands in national forests and grasslands. The Forest Service provides leadership in the protection, management, and use of the Nation's forest, rangeland, and aquatic ecosystems. Their ecosystem approach to management integrates ecological, economic, and social factors to maintain and enhance the quality of the environment to meet current and future needs. Through implementation of land and resource management plans, the agency is said to sustain ecosystems by restoring and maintaining species diversity and ecological productivity.
