U.S. Forest Service (USFS)
The Forest Service (USFS) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that manages public lands in national forests and grasslands. The Forest Service provides leadership in the protection, management, and use of the Nation's forest, rangeland, and aquatic ecosystems. Their ecosystem approach to management integrates ecological, economic, and social factors to maintain and enhance the quality of the environment to meet current and future needs. Through implementation of land and resource management plans, the agency is said to sustain ecosystems by restoring and maintaining species diversity and ecological productivity.
Research activities at the USFS cover a wide range of topics on climate change. Forest Service Research and Development provides long term research, scientific information, and tools that can be used by managers and policymakers to address climate change impacts to forests and rangelands. Climate change-related activities are carried out within Research Stations across the country.
The Climate Change Resource Center has been developed as a reference for USFS resource managers and decision makers who need information and tools to address climate change in planning and project implementation on national forests.
The 'National Roadmap for Responding to Climate Change' is the Forest Service's blueprint for responding to a changing climate and is part of the overall and ongoing effort by the Agency to restore forest and grassland landscapes. One of the measurement criteria of the Forest Service’s roadmap is a scorecard rating system to be used by all national forests and grasslands to gage the success of efforts to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate.
