Coastal Defense is an application for examining how coastal habitats such as oyster reefs, coral reefs, tidal marshes, mangroves, beach dunes, and seagrass help protect coastal areas by reducing wave energy hitting the shore. The Coastal Defense “app” is a module of the Coastal Resilience network and tool platform, developed in part by The Nature Conservancy. The app identifies the coastal protection value of existing reef and wetland habitats and allows users to design restoration solutions.

The U. S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has reviewed what federal agencies are doing to incorporate climate change adaptation into their natural resource planning and management activities. In August 2007, the GAO reported that federal natural resource managers lacked specific guidance for incorporating climate change into their planning efforts and management actions. This report examines (1) steps key federal natural resource management agencies have taken since 2007 to address climate change adaptation and (2) how these agencies have collaborated with each other at the national level since 2007 to address climate change adaptation.

The Sustainable Working Waterfronts Toolkit is a web-based portal to many resources for decision and policy makers, waterfront landowners, and waterfront users. The Toolkit contains information about the historical and current use of waterfront space; the economic value of working waterfronts; and legal, policy, and financing tools that can be used to preserve, enhance, and protect these valuable areas. The Toolkit also features detailed case studies of successful working waterfronts initiatives from communities around the country.

Washington’s 2012 Stream Habitat Restoration Guidelines, prepared for the Washington State Aquatic Habitat Guidelines Program, include a Climate Change Appendix that summarizes the science and impacts of climate change on stream habitat in Washington, and strategies for ensuring that stream habitat restoration efforts are designed to be resilient to climate change impacts. The purpose of the Guidelines is to promote process based natural stream restoration, rehabilitating aquatic and riparian ecosystems.

This Policy Tool Kit was developed by the Center for Island Climate Adaptation and Policy (“ICAP”) and the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program. From the Georgetown Climate Center, this report contains two case studies from the Western United States that explore water shortages in the West, water rights along the Colorado River, and the protection of an endangered ground-dwelling bird: the greater sage grouse.
