Getting Climate Smart: A Water Preparedness Guide for State Action

April 22, 2013

This state action guide was developed by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and American Rivers to provide water managers and state governments with information to help comprehensively plan and prepare for the water-related impacts of climate change. The guide combines practical advice and real-world case studies while outlining a six-step planning process for state governments, water managers, and other stakeholders to develop and implement climate preparedness plans.

Wildlife in a Warming World: Confronting the Climate Crisis

January 30, 2013

From the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), Wildlife in a Warming World examines case studies from across the country illustrating how climate change is altering wildlife habitats and contributing to population declines. Recommendations are made to protect both wildlife and communities in various ecosystems from the impacts of climate change, such as extreme weather, sea level rise and wildfires.

National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy

March 26, 2013

Founded on an agreement among major conservation interests (e. g. local governments, states, tribes, conservation organizations, federal agencies, and private landowners), the National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy is an integrated, coordinated, and comprehensive response to the threats of climate change. This multi-partner strategy outlines a unified approach to maintaining the key terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems needed to sustain fish, wildlife and plant resources and the services they provide in the face of accelerating climate change.

Restoring the Great Lakes' Coastal Future - Technical Guidance for the Design and Implementation of Climate-Smart Restoration Projects

2011

The purpose of this report is to provide an initial suite of tools and methods to assist in the planning and implementation of climate-smart restoration by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its partners and grantees. The National Wildlife Federation and EcoAdapt have partnered with NOAA’s Great Lakes Habitat Restoration Program to include climate change in the design and implementation of Great Lakes restoration projects. This guide presents a project-based approach to adjusting restoration activities to address the impacts of climate change on the region.

Beyond Season's End: A Path Forward for Fish and Wildlife in the Era of Climate Change

2009

Seasons End: Global Warming's Threat to Hunting and Fishing (see separate entry)  described the impacts of climate change to coldwater fisheries, big game, upland birds, and waterfowl. A year later, this book, Beyond Seasons' End, was released to explain what can be done to protect fish and wildlife populations and sporting traditions under changing climate conditions. It presents ideas from fish and wildlife professionals about actions that the human community can take to assist the wild community adapting to climate change.

Aquarius: A Modeling System for River Basin Water Allocation

Aquarius is a software application developed by the Rocky Mountain Research Station of the U. S Forest Service and Colorado State University. The modeling system depicts the temporal and spatial allocation of water flows among competing traditional and nontraditional water uses in a river basin. The program can be used to determine economically efficient water destination strategies by systematically examining, using a nonlinear optimization technique, the feasibility of reallocating unused or marginally valuable water storage and releases in favor of alternative uses.
