Transforming the Means and Ends of Natural Resource Management

2011

This article, from the North Carolina Law Review, addresses limitations of existing regulatory systems to manage the effects of climate change on natural resources in the United States. The Article explores the implications of continuing to rely on conventionally static and fragmented decision making, passive management, and historical preservation when global climatic shifts are widely expected to lead to rapid changes in ecological systems that are unforeseen, novel, and potentially detrimental to ecological diversity and function.

Mississippi Urban Forest Council: Terry, Mississippi Arboretum Project

2011

Terry, Mississippi is a small town of less that 1,500 people 15 miles southwest of Jackson Mississippi that is home to two small parks. In 2011, in collaboration with the Mississippi Forestry Commission and the Mississippi Urban Forest Council, the Mayor’s Office announced an initiative to plant trees throughout the town in order to maintain its “Americana” feel. Managing Changing Landscapes in the Southwestern United States

January 2011

This regional assessment examines the impacts of temperature change from 1951-2006 on natural resources in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. It documents that warming has already affected habitats, watersheds, and species of conservation concern in the Southwest, by influencing the timing of seasonal events or amplifying the impacts of natural disturbances such as wildfire and drought.

An Emerging Triad: Air Pollution, Beetles, and Wildfire

Winter 2010

This 'Science Perspectives' report, from the Pacific Southwest Research Station of the U.S. Forest Service, discusses biochemical changes in trees stressed by drought and air pollution. Such changes may attract bark beetles, overwhelming the trees' defense mechanisms and increasing their vulnerability to disease, death and the promotion of wildfires. These forest impacts are exacerbated by climate change.
