The State of Marine and Coastal Adaptation in North America: A Synthesis of Emerging Ideas

January 2011

This report presents EcoAdapt's synthesis of climate adaptation projects throughout North America's marine and coastal environments. The report provides an overview of key climate change impacts on the natural and built environments in marine and coastal U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and a thorough review of adaptation options available to marine and coastal managers.

America’s Climate Choices: A Conversation on America’s Climate Choices

2011

The report, 'A Conversation on America's Climate Choices,' is the final volume of the America’s Climate Choices suite of activities - a series of five studies requested by Congress.  This report gives an overview of the nation’s options for responding to climate change impacts through broad adaptation strategies. The document offers advice on how to weigh the potential risks and benefits associated with different actions that might be taken to respond to climate change, and how to ensure that actions are as effective as possible.

Direct Potable Reuse: A Path Forward

2011

This report identifies the information and research needed to provide a basis for the feasibility of direct potable reuse (DPR), which is the introduction of purified water into a water supply distribution system or the raw water supply immediately upstream of a water treatment plant. Topics discussed include issues regarding public acceptance, engineering, economics, and regulations. Although the background information on DPR and the needed research identified in this report are applicable across the country and throughout the world, the primary focus is on providing information so that the feasibility of DPR can be evaluated in California.

Warming World: Impacts by Degree

2011

This booklet summarizes the findings of a report from the National Research Council, Climate Stabilization Targets: Emissions, Concentrations, and Impacts over Decades to Millennia (2011). The report summarizes the impacts of greenhouse gas stabilization targets on near-term and future climate change - evaluating the implications of different  targets, with particular emphasis on avoiding serious or irreversible impacts on the Earth’s climate. Each stabilization target discussed results in a different future climate, with changes that may be difficult or impossible to reverse for millennia.

Northwoods Climate Change Response Framework

2011

To address climate change impacts on northern Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin forests, the ‘Northwoods Climate Change Response Framework’ was established in 2011. The project has involved more than 40 scientists and natural resource professionals collaborating to assess the vulnerability of forest ecosystems to climate change – developing the Framework for resource management, conservation, and collaboration in adaptation planning.

Delaware Estuary Living Shoreline Initiative

From the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary (PDE), the Delaware Estuary Living Shoreline Initiative (DELSI) is a pilot project designed to stabilize eroding shorelines of tidal marshes. PDE with Rutgers University has developed the "DELSI Tactic" of living shorelines which uniquely uses a combination of native wetland plants, natural structures, and intertidal shellfish to trap sediment and absorb waves. The DELSI Tactic provides an economical approach to communities that are struggling to combat the erosion of tidal marshes.

Virginia Living Shorelines Initiative

2011

Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) was directed by SB 964 in 2011 to develop and implement a general permit regulation that authorizes and encourages the use of living shorelines as the preferred alternative for stabilizing tidal shorelines. In 2015 and again in 2017 the VMRC established permitting regulations pursuant to SB 964. The Living Shoreline Group 1 (2015) and 2 (2017) General Permits for Certain Shoreline Treatments are regulations which streamline the permitting process incentivizing property owners to utilize a living shoreline approach to manage shoreline erosion, and promote tidal wetland vegetation to restore or enhance ecosystem services.

City of Berkeley, California Climate Action Plan Progress Report

2011

In June 2009, the City of Berkeley, California's City Council adopted a Climate Action Plan (CAP) designed to guide community-wide efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 33 percent below 2000 levels by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050. This report demonstrates the status of progress toward the CAP goals, intending to keep the community informed of efforts underway to implement the plan while enabling improved, informed management of climate action projects and programs. Climate Change in Kivalina, Alaska - Strategies for Community Health

January 2011

Kivalina is a coastal Iñupiat village of 400 people in Northwest Alaska, on a barrier island of the Chukchi Sea.  This report details the struggles of the community of Kivalina to adapt to impacts of climate change including rising sea levels, storm surge, and melting permafrost, for which the village is quite vulnerable. The report contains detailed accounts of the Kivalina people and community, as well as the climate, seasons, air, sea, coast, land, rivers, biota, water, and food which all support the village's subsistence lifestyle.
