In 2014, Pennsylvania was awarded $1. 5 million from the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act to help stabilize or repair historic properties damaged by Hurricane Sandy, and undertake disaster-related planning initiatives. The funding enabled the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office to assist select counties and the City of Philadelphia with prioritizing their communities’ historic properties and build protective measures into hazard mitigation plans for historic property considerations.

This report describes the proceedings of the 6th Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation - the Resilient Cities forum on urban resilience and climate change adaptation that convened in Bonn, Germany in 2015. The outcomes presented in the report provide a snapshot of the state of urban resilience, including good practices, challenges, and innovations for creating more resilient cities. The report includes general messages from the congress discussions, city case studies, tools and solutions, which are also cross-referenced to additional information and online resources.

This report describes the stormwater management challenges that Southern Florida faces due to climate change and offers several recommendations for how these issues can be addressed. It discusses three basin scale strategies: Everglades restoration, adjusting regional water control practices, and small scale adaptation efforts. Local governments can also play a pivotal role by investing in green infrastructure and implementing financing strategies for stormwater management. This guidance document is one in a series of publications designed to assist county and municipal policymakers, administrators and program staff with implementation of the 110 recommendations contained within the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact’s 2012 Regional Climate Action Plan.

This case study, developed by the Georgetown Climate Center, examines state and local activities in Louisiana to reduce coastal vulnerability from sea level rise, extreme storms, and land subsidence. It focuses on how the state is prioritizing and designing coastal flood protection and restoration projects in consideration of future sea-level rise through the Louisiana Coastal Master Plan.

This case study discusses how Washington DC is preparing for the impacts of climate change including sea-level rise, increasing flood risks, and heat waves. The case study explores how District agencies integrated considerations of climate change when developing the city's Sustainable DC plan, which was developed through an interagency working group. This effort spurred the development of a city-wide vulnerability assessment and adaptation plan. The case study also explores the District’s efforts to reduce urban heat islands by making grants to pilot the use of cool roofs, implementing the Smart Roof Initiative to retrofit District-owned buildings, and adopting of a new Green Building Code.

The Cape Cod Commission (“Commission”) has begun to systematically consider the long-range impacts of climate change as it works to guide regional transportation- and development-planning efforts for an iconic but vulnerable area of coastal Massachusetts. The Commission is responsible for directing regional land-use policy, regulating developments whose impacts cross town boundaries, and supporting the 15 Cape Cod municipalities that make up Barnstable County with planning and technical expertise.

In 2014, the City of Storm Lake, Iowa was chosen for a pilot project by the Iowa Economic Development Authority to develop a plan for city-wide green infrastructure technology for improved urban water management - including storm, sanitary, and potable water solutions. This Plan is meant to serve as a case study and guidance document for green infrastructure planning in other communities. The Plan demonstrates a process that can be replicated and scaled to any size city.

NOAA provides communities with a six-step process to assess the costs and benefits of green infrastructure (GI) to reduce flooding in this report. Communities can use this guide to inform flood risk planning, and to assess the cost effectiveness of implementing green infrastructure projects. The primary steps and related actions provided in the guide are designed to lead a community to the implementation of a green infrastructure strategy for a given watershed.
