The National Park Service (NPS) has taken interim and long-term measures to repair and reinforce a one-mile section of the access road to Exit Glacier, the most accessible and popular area of Kenai Fjords National Park, to address flooding damage exacerbated by climate impacts. While flooding is a recurring event in the glacial area, less predictable flow patterns and increased flood frequency due to climate change have destabilized drainage on the road. NPS worked with highway engineers to design an interim solution, using concrete barriers to keep flood waters off the road, while continuing to study long-term stabilization solutions.

This white paper from the California Energy Commission's California Climate Change Center, examines five case studies from the San Francisco Bay region (Hayward, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Marin Counties, and the regional adaptation process) to identify the ongoing adaptation processes, the climate adaptation barriers encountered by local government entities, and further develop a diagnostic framework for managing these barriers. Relevant data were collected through key informant interviews, public documents, observation of and/or participation in public meetings, and a statewide survey.

Designed to inform the Adapting to Rising Tides project (ART) being led by the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, the purpose of the white paper is to integrate social equity into adaptation planning for sea level rise and storm events. The report describes a social vulnerability assessment completed for the study area and the results; presents case studies which integrate equity into adaptation planning; and provides decision support tools and recommendations to inform social equity and coastal planning for the San Francisco Bay Area of California.

Developed by the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR), the Ocean Beach Master Plan (OBMP) provides a long-term strategy for responding to current and future sea-level rise impacts along the 3. 5-mile stretch of San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, and provides recommendations for adapting the Great Highway, which runs adjacent to the beach. The strategy focuses on the protection and relocation of transportation infrastructure, including: (1) rerouting the southern portion of the Great Highway; (2) protecting and restoring the shoreline and beach; (3) reducing the width of the Great Highway; (4) repairing seaside dunes; (5) facilitating faster travel between Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach; and (6) improving bicycle paths and sidewalks near Ocean Beach.

Banking on Green describes the cost-effectiveness of green infrastructure (GI) for stormwater management, and the co-benefits of energy reduction, flood mitigation, and improved public health outcomes. American Rivers, Water Environment Federation, American Society of Landscape Architects, and ECONorthwest created this report to put information from GI performance research into the hands of decision makers. Detailing the benefits of green infrastructure, along with documented examples of successful GI practices, this document provides information on the economics and climate change adaptation benefits of GI for policymakers, municipal and utility officials, and the general public.

The Community School Parks program is a partnership service agreement and shared use policy that enables community members in under-resourced neighborhoods to access school parks and playgrounds during off-school hours when they would normally be closed to the public. People for Parks, now a program of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust (LANLT), opened the first Community School Parks in 2012 and has expanded the program since with the partnership with LANLT and the development of the shared use policy with the LA Unified School District that enables expanded access to school parks. These Community School Parks (CSPs) provide opportunities for youth, families, and neighbors within the community to connect, recreate, and enjoy green and open space in a safe environment. The program targets dense neighborhoods, typically low-income and communities of color, that are park-scarce and would not otherwise have access to open space within walking distance. In addition to Community School Parks, LANLT works to create new green space in communities of color, engaging community members from concept development through to implementation and park stewardship.

This report assesses the anticipated impacts of climate change on transportation infrastructure in the Hampton Roads region, and is a demonstration of the approach utilized to do so. In this region of Virginia, climate impacts - such as sea level rise - are already underway in many of the low-lying communities. This area also is experiencing significant land subsidence (sinking), making it even more vulnerable to sea level rise and resulting floods than some other coastal locations. The region's proximity to the coast makes it particularly susceptible to tropical storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes that can result in turn.

This report uses the example of flood recovery after the 2008 Midwest floods to propose a more effective way for federal, state, and municipal governments to work together to address the impacts of climate change. The Environmental Protection Agency conducted a pilot project providing technical assistance to vulnerable cities in eastern Iowa, and the analysis was utilized as a case study for this report. The results of the Iowa Pilot Project are relevant to many climate change adaptation efforts around the country.

In this report the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has compiled local and regional research findings about the water-related impacts of climate change in 12 U. S. cities. NRDC examined more than 75 scientific studies, as well as data and reports generated by government agencies and nonprofit organizations. The report makes clear that some of the most profound effects of climate change are water-related, such as sea-level rise, increased rain and storms, flooding, and drought, and that these kinds of events are likely to increase in the coming years as a result of climate change.
