The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) partners with more than 40 data contributors from various government agencies, academic institutions, and other organizations to compile a key set of indicators related to climate change. The indicators are developed to better understand changes observed from long-term records related to the causes and effects of climate change, the significance of these changes, and their possible consequences for people, the environment, and society. EPA currently presents 37 indicators and five features that each highlight a specific region, data record, or area of interest.

Sonoma County, California developed their Climate Action 2020 and Beyond plan primarily to address greenhouse gas mitigation opportunities for the county, but also to initiate adaptation planning. A chapter of the report focused on climate change adaptation is offered as the Climate Readiness Plan. This plan provides a vulnerability assessment that evaluates climate impacts on three key community resource areas - people and social systems, built systems, and natural and working lands. This chapter also discusses adaptation solutions already underway in Sonoma, and provides general adaptation goals and strategies as a starting point for the County to respond to the impacts identified through the vulnerability assessment.

The Newark Municipal Council passed the Environmental Justice and Cumulative Impacts Ordinance to address long standing health disparities among Newark’s poorest communities. While the ordinance is not specifically about climate change, it does provide a mechanism to address cumulative environmental impacts that lead to the disproportionate climate risks on low-income residents and people of color. This ordinance requires industrial and commercial development proposals to include information about cumulative environmental impacts that will allow decisionmakers and the public to make an informed decision if the development meets the city’s sustainability goals.

The Draft Interagency Concept for Community Resilience Indicators and National-Level Measures paper seeks to identify a common framework for communities to assess their resilience using federal data. Published by the Mitigation Framework Leadership Group (MitFLG) - a federal workgroup led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - the report provides indicators aimed at helping local communities to gauge their own resilience capacity and federal agencies to determine the effectiveness of their actions.

The City of Del Mar, California adopted a Climate Action Plan in June 2016. The plan focuses on how the city is going to reach a goal of 100% renewable power by 2035, the plan also includes a chapter on adaptation (Chapter 4). The Adaptation Chapter lays out climate change projections that the city can anticipate: warmer temperatures, increased droughts, and more extreme weather events. It then lays out specific adaptation strategies by sector and impact, including the following examples:
Public health - restore natural areas to improve air and water quality; facilitate access to cooling centers; reduce urban heat islands with cool pavements and by increasing urban tree canopy; design buildings to reduce reliance on mechanical cooling and energy (e.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has launched the New York Climate Change Science Clearinghouse - a website for climate-related information including flood maps, data on sea level and temperature changes, and other information to aid in planning for future extreme weather events. Developed by New York State in partnership with federal, university and public-private organizations, the Clearinghouse provides access to more than 1,000 maps, data sets, and documents that show the impacts of climate change on infrastructure, transportation, energy, water resources, ecosystems, agriculture and public health.

In April 2016, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a groundbreaking ordinance to address environmental justice concerns within three distinct neighborhoods: Boyle Heights, Pacoima-Sun Valley, and Wilmington. For decades, these three communities – comprised primarily of low-income, Latinx individuals and families – suffered a wide range of health effects, due mostly to the high concentration of polluting industrial sites within their neighborhoods. To address these inequalities, LA City Council passed and implemented the Clean Up Green Up Ordinance with a three-pronged goal in mind: (1) to reduce pollution in the most toxic, hotspot areas; (2) to prevent additional pollution; and (3) to revitalize these neighborhoods through supporting local businesses and economic development.

The U. S. Global Climate Research Program (USGCRP) Climate and Health Assessment delineates climate-related health impacts in the United States - building on the USGCRP’s 2014 National Climate Assessment. The report/online interactive website provides a comprehensive assessment of observed and projected health impacts from climate change, discusses the climate causal pathways while providing explicit scientific support, identifies emerging issues, and recognizes particular impacts on vulnerable populations.

The Maryland Climate and Health Profile report details current and future impacts of climate change on public health in Maryland. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) and the University of Maryland School of Public Health have identified adverse health outcomes that are projected to be exacerbated across the state using historical climate data along with health data - providing the first quantitative estimate of how extreme events are affecting the public health in Maryland, up to 2040.
