EPA's Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities seeks to provide targeted technical assistance to communities to protect the environment, promote equitable development and help address the challenges of climate change using a variety of tools that have demonstrated results and widespread application. This technical assistance is designed to help selected local and/or tribal governments to implement development approaches that improve public health, create jobs, expand economic opportunity, and improve overall quality of life.

Kivalina is a coastal Iñupiat village of 400 people in Northwest Alaska, on a barrier island of the Chukchi Sea. This report details the struggles of the community of Kivalina to adapt to impacts of climate change including rising sea levels, storm surge, and melting permafrost, for which the village is quite vulnerable. The report contains detailed accounts of the Kivalina people and community, as well as the climate, seasons, air, sea, coast, land, rivers, biota, water, and food which all support the village's subsistence lifestyle.

In 2007, the Oregon State Legislature charged the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute (OCCRI), via HB 3543, with assessing climate change science including biological, physical and social science in Oregon, and expected climate impacts. This inaugural assessment report is meant to act as a compendium of the relevant research on climate change and its impacts on the state of Oregon. This report draws on a large body of work on climate change impacts in the western U. S. from the Climate Impacts Group at the University of Washington (CIG), and the California Climate Action Team.

Oregon's Climate Change Adaptation Framework is the result of a collaborative effort between Oregon's state agencies with support from the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute. This report provides a framework for the continued development of strategies and plans to address future climate conditions in the state. Priority climate risks and their respective impacts on key sectors are outlined, followed by over 100 adaptation strategies for near- and long-term planning and implementation.
This framework identifies 11 key risks that are likely to occur.

This 2010 Update to Connecticut's Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan expands the 2007 plan to cover years 2010 - 2013. A good example of mainstreaming the consideration of climate change into existing planning efforts, this update discusses the projected impacts of climate change within each of the major sections of the plan addressing hurricanes, tornadoes, cyclones, precipitation, flooding, droughts, and wildland fires, and their relation to hazard mitigation as a whole.
