Developed by the Center for Planning Excellence (CPEX), the Louisiana Coastal Land Use Toolkit contains development standards that are designed to support hazard mitigation and natural resource protection in the coastal areas of Louisiana. The Toolkit offers a customizable regulatory framework for land use and development, in particular for those communities facing coastal and stormwater flooding. The Toolkit includes model zoning and subdivision codes that can be used to build more resilient coastal communities that are adaptive to these climate impacts and others, by adopting sustainable development and Smart Growth principles.

The City of Miami-Beach is taking action to protect Miami Beach roads, sidewalks, storm drains, and other key infrastructure from sea-level rise and flooding by installing pumps, raising roads, and protecting the city with seawalls. The project seeks to guard both critical resources like the City’s water and power supply as well as roads and property from flooding. The City is in the process of investing an estimated $500 million for this project that is slated to last six more years. Funding comes from local taxes and 84% increase in stormwater fees.

In 2011 a partnership formed between the City of Bridgeport, Greater Bridgeport Regional Council, The Nature Conservancy, Clean Air Cool Planet, and the Regional Plan Association to address climate impacts in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The partnership's focus was on increasing awareness of risks associated with extreme weather and natural and climate-related hazards, and assessing the risks, strength and vulnerabilities within the City of Bridgeport. This focus was achieved through a series of Climate Preparedness Workshops in 2012.

The North Carolina Interagency Leadership Team (ILT) - a group of 11 state and federal agencies - developed this coordinated climate adaptation strategy providing a framework for planning an integrated climate adaptation response for North Carolina. The report discusses how the state can proactively prepare for projected impacts of climate variability and weather extremes, with the emphasis on practical, economically feasible options that can be undertaken by state agencies, working with willing partners at local, regional, and federal levels.

The '2012 Vulnerability and Adaptation Study' is California's third major assessment on climate change. California produces periodic scientific assessments on the potential impacts of climate change on the state, and reports potential adaptation responses. Required by Executive Order #S-03-05, these assessments influence legislation and inform policy makers. The Third California Climate Change Assessment is a compilation of 37 reports which outline local and statewide vulnerabilities to climate change, for the energy, water, agriculture, public health, coastal, transportation, and ecological resource sectors.

The World Bank produced this framework for conducting climate risk assessments to help cities plan for the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. The framework is intended for city decision makers, urban practitioners, and is fitting for use by public, private, and non-governmental entities. It is adaptable to cities of differing financial statuses, population size, hazard and institutional capacities.

This article published in the Sea Grant Law and Policy Journal examines two sea-level rise adaptation approaches that could be applied in Connecticut: a local-level approach using zoning and floodplain regulations, and state-level approach modeled after cutting-edge sea level rise regulations adopted by neighboring Rhode Island. For each method, the authors examine what measures can be implemented now given existing legal authorities delegated to state agencies and municipalities; what measures will require additional delegations or amendments to existing statutes or regulations; and what level of government is best suited to implement different measures (state or local).

This Hawaii legislation integrates climate change adaptation priority guidelines into the current statewide planning system. The guidelines were developed through a collaboration between county, state and federal agencies, as well as businesses, community and native Hawaiian organizations. The policy identifies the challenges associated with rising temperatures, flooding, and coastal erosion - endorsing the 1998 Hawai'i Climate Change Action Plan.
