The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) West Coast Climate Change Adaptation Peer Exchange gave transportation officials from western states an opportunity to learn more about climate impacts on transportation assets and plan for improved resilience. The participants in the exchange, California DOT (Caltrans), Oregon DOT (ODOT), and Washington State DOT (WSDOT), collaborated on strategies for assessing risks related to climate change, incorporating adaptation into asset management and operations, and communicating about the need for adaptation.

This report from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) analyzes late-20th century snowpack reductions data to support findings that snowpack in the Western regions of North America has been declining since 1950. The data suggests that snowpack declines in the Rocky Mountains over the last 30 years are unusual compared to the past few centuries.

The 2011 Florida Legislature passed the Community Planning Act (CPA - HB 7207) making significant changes to the state’s growth management laws, including the addition of optional adaptation planning for coastal hazards and the potential impacts of sea level rise. The Adaptation Action Area (AAA), as defined in the CPA, is an optional comprehensive plan designation for areas that experience coastal flooding and that are vulnerable to the related impacts of rising sea levels for prioritizing funding for infrastructure and adaptation planning.

The City of Alexandria released its Energy and Climate Change Action Plan 2012 – 2020 (ECCAP) in March 2011. The plan builds on the existing Eco-City Charter and Environmental Action Plan 2030 (EAP) by providing information on policies and measures that the City is already undertaking, as well as possible new short-term and medium-term measures to achieve the EAP’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, and identifies measures for adapting to the impacts of climate change. The adaptation strategies evaluated include measures to reduce the potential impacts of rising sea level and flooding in Alexandria, reducing water demand and increasing water conservation, reduce impacts of extreme heat events, and mitigating damage to natural ecosystems.

In 2011, the City of Lewes, Delaware undertook a pilot project to develop a unified Hazard Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Action Plan, which considers the City’s vulnerability to climate change, particularly sea-level rise, and includes an evaluation of the vulnerability of roads and critical evacuation routes.

Developed through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Climate Ready Estuaries program, this primer identifies approaches for inland migration of beaches and wetlands as sea level rises due to climate change. The report describes how these measures can be used by state and local governments in cases where traditional protective measures such as the construction of dikes, seawalls, and other structures may prove economically or environmentally unsustainable.

From the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program, the goals of this project were to first compile a priority list of species occurring in Pennsylvania that are likely vulnerable to climate change, and to then examine the climate change vulnerability of species included in the priority list. The overall objective was to not only identify climate change vulnerable species but to also examine the abiotic factors and life history characteristics that contribute to their increased vulnerability.

This interactive map provided by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES - formally the Pew Center on Global Climate Change) shows where historically some of the most significant heat waves, floods, droughts, and wildfires have occurred across the United States since 1995. The map focuses on the types of extreme weather events that are already more frequent and/or intense and the risk of which can be expected to rise in the future as a result of climate change. According to C2ES, these events impact all parts of the country and provide opportunities to learn about the potential economic and human impacts from extreme weather events and the actions needed to build resilience for the future.
