The forests of the northern Rocky Mountains are projected to have severe impacts from climate change. These impacts are summarized in this report in an accessible format intended for distribution to the general public. The study was conducted by the College of Forest Resources at the University of Montana and funded by a grant from the National Commission on Energy Policy, a project of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the International City/County Management Association, and Rhode Island Sea Grant, jointly released "Smart Growth for Coastal and Waterfront Communities," intended for planners, local government officials, developers, residents, and other stakeholders. Developed in consultation with the national Smart Growth Network, the interagency guide builds on the network's ten smart growth principles to create coastal and waterfront-specific strategies for development.

On November 15, 2008, 10 organizations consisting of non-profits and Massachusetts state agencies sponsored a conference at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts. The conference, "Responding to Climate Change: Working Together to Conserve Land, Wildlife and Habitat," was the first of its kind in the Commonwealth and in the nation. The conference brought together nearly 200 conservation leaders from across 60 organizations, including scientists, land stewards, hunters, anglers, government officials, advocates, foundation officers, and policy-makers.

This report is based on the initial findings of a study by the Economics of Climate Adaptation Working Group (ECA), a partnership between the Global Environment Facility, McKinsey & Company, Swiss Re, the Rockefeller Foundation, ClimateWorks Foundation, the European Commission, and Standard Chartered Bank. Focusing specifically on the economic aspects of adaptation, the report outlines a fact-based risk management approach to use to understand the impact of climate on their economies – and identify actions to minimize that impact at the lowest cost to society.

Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, this paper provides a brief perspective on “ecological niches” - describing how niche thinking and modeling have been used to project changes in the distributions of species, and assessing several related assumptions and uncertainties. These areas are illustrated using examples from research on California birds. The paper concludes with an assessment the usefulness of niche-based models for projecting climate-change impacts on biodiversity and the resulting implications for conservation and management.
