Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, this paper provides a brief perspective on “ecological niches” - describing how niche thinking and modeling have been used to project changes in the distributions of species, and assessing several related assumptions and uncertainties. These areas are illustrated using examples from research on California birds. The paper concludes with an assessment the usefulness of niche-based models for projecting climate-change impacts on biodiversity and the resulting implications for conservation and management.

In August 2009, Governor Patterson signed Executive Order 24 to address climate change in the State of New York. EO 24 established a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the state, as well as requiring a Climate Action Plan to address both mitigation and adaptation for key economic sectors.

This case study is intended to build awareness about the urgent need to develop strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change in specific agricultural regions. Using a process that engaged local stakeholders, this report addresses planning issues at both the farm and landscape levels. While this study focused specifically on Yolo County, this approach to assessing mitigation and adaptation potential could be useful elsewhere.

This report, from the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), recommends strategies to help wildlife adapt to the conditions caused by climate change, including providing land corridors, and reducing stress from pollution and invasive species. Included are five steps for safeguarding wildlife from climate change, and eleven wildlife profiles which address impacts to specific vulnerable eco-regions and provide possible solutions. .

The State of Nevada is amending its State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) to incorporate the potential effects of climate change in more detail. The Nevada Department of Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, Nevada Natural Heritage Program (a NatureServe network member program), Lahontan Audubon Society, and Great Basin Bird Observatory have formed a partnership to complete the amendment. Nevada's SWAP was approved in 2006, and although it identified climate change as a stressor to key habitats and species of conservation concern in a few specific areas, it did not address the degree of vulnerability each species may face due to a warming climate.

The Washington State Agency Climate Leadership bill was signed into law in July of 2009 by then Governor Gregoire. The legislation mandates an integrated climate change response strategy from multiple state agencies, to enable Washington's agencies, businesses, NGOs and individuals to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The Regional Planning Commission (RPC) was tasked by the Town of Seabrook, NH to develop adaptation strategies to protect areas of the town at risk of flooding due to climate change. The elements of this project were to: 1) conduct research on present consensus estimates of sea-level rise affecting the New England coast; 2) review approaches taken by other states and communities in responding to this threat; 3) develop maps identifying the areas of increased risk to flooding from sea-level rise specific to Seabrook; and 4) identify the various regulatory and non-regulatory options that should be considered by Seabrook to protect it from this potential risk.

In 2008, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) commissioned a review of U. S. and international approaches to address global climate change adaptation as it relates to transportation. This literature review focuses on three major categories of activities: vulnerability assessments, risk assessments, and adaptation approaches. For each of these, an overview is provided, with sample frameworks or methodologies, and examples. For adaptation approaches, strategies are also provided by climate change impact.
