Facilities are being redesigned and restored for extreme weather resiliency at the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority (BRSA) in Union Beach, New Jersey. This project is part of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s commitment to provide resiliency to the state’s water and wastewater infrastructure directly impacted by Superstorm Sandy, as developed under his 2013 water infrastructure resiliency funding initiative. The $28 million project at Union Beach will incorporate reconstruction with added resiliency of the authority’s main incinerator, pump stations and other buildings.

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water), the District of Columbia, the U. S. Department of Justice and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have established an agreement which allows DC Water to pursue an integrated green/gray infrastructure approach to reduce combined sewer overflows into rivers and to capture rainwater. The agreement addresses water quality and supply issues in the Rock Creek and Potomac watersheds which traverse Maryland, Virginia, and the District.

The New Hampshire Coastal Viewer is an online mapping tool with coastal resources spatial data, hazards-related spatial data, and other spatial data sets for New Hampshire's 42 coastal watershed communities. Launched in 2015, this tool provides users the ability to access more than 150 spatial data sets, and to make and share their own customized maps.

The Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) administers the Coastal Resilience Grant Program through its StormSmart Coasts Program which provides financial and technical resources to advance local efforts to increase natural storm damage protection, flood control, and coastal community resilience. Eligible projects can be in the areas of: vulnerability and risk assessment; public education and communication; local bylaws, adaptation plans, and other management measures; redesigns and retrofits; and natural storm-damage protection/green infrastructure.

In 2014, the state of Massachusetts issued $350 million in “green bonds” to fund water infrastructure projects, including stream bed restoration, open-space protection, and stormwater management. The difference between green and traditional bonds, is that the the proceeds form the sale of green bonds are used for projects that are beneficial to the environment. Investors who buy green bonds are paid interest and principal from the same revenues as other municipal bonds.

Maryland uses its Coastal Zone Management grant funding from NOAA to help local governments plan for an implement projects to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Historically, Maryland Department of Natural Resources allocated funds only to coastal communities because the grants were funded through NOAA's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. However, in the 2016 and 2017 grant years, DNR combined NOAA funds with funding from the Environmental Protection Agency to also make grants to green infrastructure projects to address stormwater flooding outside of the coastal zone.

Developed by researchers at the University of Florida and funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), this report details the development of a Sea Level Scenario Sketch Planning Tool for assessing vulnerabilities of transportation facilities to sea level rise. This planning framework builds off of previous FDOT-funded research that was conducted in 2012 by Florida Atlantic University, and is detailed in the report Development of a Methodology for the Assessment of Sea Level Rise Impacts on Florida’s Transportation Modes and Infrastructure.

The New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program has been established to provide additional rebuilding and revitalization assistance to communities severely damaged by Hurricanes Sandy and Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. To facilitate community resilience and redevelopment planning, the State has allocated $25 million for planning in the most affected areas. Those successfully completing a recovery plan will be eligible to receive funds to support the implementation of projects and activities identified in the plans.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) considered sea-level rise as a factor in early design and environmental review for the Mukilteo Multimodal Terminal Project (“Project”). The Project will develop a new terminal for the Mukilteo/Clinton Ferry, which provides transportation between Whidbey Island and the Seattle metropolitan area. In the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Project, WSDOT acknowledged that changing climate would impact the function and operations of Multimodal Project over the 50 to 100 year lifespan of the facility.

Prepared for the Washington State Aquatic Habitat Guidelines Program, the purpose of these guidelines is to promote responsible management of Puget Sound shores, preserve natural resources and coastal ecological processes, and increase resilience of the shoreline. These guidelines are intended to give the coastal designer an overview of all of the necessary elements to inform the development of project goals and the tools to design appropriate and environmentally responsible projects for marine shores in Puget Sound.
