Climate Change Preparation Planning on National Landscape Conservation System Lands

The National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) is a collection of BLM lands which are mandated to protect specific resources, including natural, cultural, geologic, scenic, scientific, and recreational resources, found within their boundaries. Several agencies, including the BLM and the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, are mandated by DOI Secretarial Order 3289 to "consider and analyze potential climate change impacts when undertaking long-range planning exercises, setting priorities for scientific research, developing multi-year management plans, and making major decisions about the potential use of resources under the Department's purview.

Public Health Impacts of Climate Change in Washington State: Projected Mortality Risks Due to Heat Events and Air Pollution

As a subset of the state's 2009 Climate Change Impact Assessment, this chapter is focused on two key public health concerns related to climate change: heat-related illness and worsening air quality. This study had three goals: 1) to determine the historical relationship between extreme heat events and mortality in different regions of Washington State, for selected age groups and causes of death, 2) to use these findings to predict the number of excess deaths by age group and cause during projected heat events in years 2025, 2045 and 2085, and 3) to use estimates of the relationship between ozone concentration and mortality available from the scientific literature to predict the number of excess deaths in mid-century (2045-2054) due to ozone under a changing climate, assuming a growing population.

Coastal Inundation Toolkit
The Coastal Inundation Toolkit was developed by the Digital Coast Partnership Group to help communities understand and address coastal inundation issues - where water covers what is normally dry land. Information and resources are organized into 5 stages: understanding coastal inundation, identifying community risks and vulnerabilities, creating inundation maps, communicating risks and vulnerability, and discovering what others are doing to address inundation. For each of these 5 areas, explanations and guidance are provided with links to the specific resources available from Digital Coast to support that specific step in the process, making this a user-friendly way to support assessments and planning for sea level rise and extreme weather events.

Western Governors' Association Policy Resolution 09-2: Supporting the Integration of Climate Change Adaptation Science in the West

Impacts of Climate Change on Forests of the Northern Rocky Mountains

The forests of the northern Rocky Mountains are projected to have severe impacts from climate change. These impacts are summarized in this report in an accessible format intended for distribution to the general public. The study was conducted by the College of Forest Resources at the University of Montana and funded by a grant from the National Commission on Energy Policy, a project of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Washington State Agency Climate Leadership - WA SB 5560
July 26, 2009
The Washington State Agency Climate Leadership bill was signed into law in July of 2009 by then Governor Gregoire. The legislation mandates an integrated climate change response strategy from multiple state agencies, to enable Washington's agencies, businesses, NGOs and individuals to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Ask the Climate Question: Adapting to Climate Change Impacts in Urban Regions

This report highlights the innovative measures local governments are implementing to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Developed by the Center for Clean Air Policy's (CCAP) Urban Leaders Adaptation Initiative, the report offers best practices for how cities and counties throughout the country should be thinking about the actions and strategies that can reduce their communities' vulnerability to the dangers of a changing climate. Additionally, guidance recommendations for the planning process are synthesized, as are recommendations for the federal government to support local adaptation efforts.

Adapting to Climate Change: Strategies from King County, Washington
