Coastal Resilience Index: A Community Self-Assessment

Developed from a partnership between the Gulf of Mexico Alliance, the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, Louisiana Sea Grant, Texas Sea Grant, Florida Sea Grant, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coastal Storms Program and the Gulf of Mexico Program, the Coastal Resilience Index was designed to help every coastal community become more resilient to the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise, storm surge and flooding.

Climate Change Tree Atlas

The Climate Change Tree Atlas helps determine current and future suitable habitat and distribution of 134 tree species in the Eastern United States based on current climate and projected suitable habitat for the year 2100. The Atlas provides detailed information on environmental characteristics defining these distributions for each species, and can be used to develop large-scale projections of species responses to climate change. Lee County, Florida Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment

This vulnerability assessment identifies significant projected climate changes for Lee County, Florida, and the anticipated effects of those changes on both natural and man-made systems in the region. The report also identifies potentially critical vulnerabilities that will need to be addressed by adaptation or accommodation in Lee County. It examines the current climate and ongoing climate change in southwest Florida along with five future scenarios of climate change into the year 2100. These scenarios include: a condition that involves a future in which mitigative actions are undertaken to reduce the human influence on climate change (Stanton and Ackerman 2007), a 90% probable future predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 2007b), a 50% probable future predicted by IPCC, a 5% probable future predicted by the IPCC, and a “very worst” future in which no actions are taken to address climate change (Stanton and Ackerman 2007).

Lee County, Florida Climate Change Resiliency Strategy (CCRS)

Building on the Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for Lee County, Florida the CCRS includes a process for identifying potential climate change resiliency strategies through coordination and consultation with local government leadership in 39 Lee County departments and divisions. Identification of resiliency strategies that could be utilized by Lee County to reduce the negative effects of climate change help in positioning the County to take advantage of potential climate prosperity opportunities.

Effectively Addressing Climate Change Through Adaptation for the Energy Gulf Coast

This presentation provides a synthesis of the analysis conducted on the economic impacts of climate change on the Gulf Coast. The research provides current and projected costs of storm surges, sea level rise, and wind related damage over the next 20 years. The risks, across numerous asset types, such as on-shore and off-shore oil and gas structures, and geographic areas are evaluated. Potential costs and benefits of numerous possible adaptation measures are presented. .

Miami-Dade County, Florida Climate Change Advisory Task Force – Status Update
August 2010
In July, 2006, the Board of County Commissioners established the Miami-Dade County Climate Change Advisory Task Force (CCATF), through the adoption of Ordinance 06-113. The CCATF served as an advisory board to the Board of County Commissioners and was charged with identifying potential future climate change impacts to Miami-Dade County, while providing recommendations regarding mitigation and adaptation measures to respond to climate change.

Climate Change and the Florida Keys

This report addressed the socioeconomic and ecological effects that may arise from climate change in the Florida Keys, including two appendices that identify key issues related to the future of the Keys over the 21st century. Four background papers address the global environment (Hoegh Guldberg 2010a,b,c,d), which are described first to put the Florida Keys into context. This research is part of the Socioeconomic Research and Monitoring Program in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, as conducted by the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA).

Municipal Adaptation to Sea-Level Rise: City of Satellite Beach, Florida

Coastal Vulnerability Assessment of the Northern Gulf of Mexico to Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Change
July 2010
This report, prepared by the U. S. Geologic Survey, uses an index to assess the vulnerability of the Gulf Coast - from Galveston, Texas to Panama City, Florida. The Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) applied is based on six factors that influence the risk sea-level rise poses: geomorphology, historical shoreline change rate, regional coastal slope, relative sea-level change, mean significant wave height, and mean tidal range. CVI data can be used in at least two ways: (1) as a way of identifying areas where physical changes are most likely to occur as sea-level rises, and (2) as a planning tool for managing and protecting resources along the Northern Gulf of Mexico.

Climate Change Action Plan for the Florida Reef System 2010 - 2015
June 2010
A product of The Nature Conservancy's Florida Reef Resilience Program (FRRP), this action plan was developed by reef managers, scientists and reef users from across South Florida as a guide for better coordination of reef management across local, state, and federal jurisdictions. It serves as a more detailed, Florida-specific companion to the climate change goals and objectives in the report “NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program Goals & Objectives 2010-2015” (NOAA CRCP 2009).
