Coastal Tourism, Sustainability, and Climate Change in the Caribbean

From The Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) this 2 volume book examines climate change impacts on the coastal tourism environment, and discusses adaptive solutions that aim to help grow the tourism trade sustainably. Volume I is focused on impacts to Hotels and Beaches, and Volume II on “Supporting Activities” including Golf, Sustainable Food Sourcing, and Airlines and Airports. Both volumes offer essays and case studies by 33 different experts that discuss how tourism sectors in the Caribbean both contribute to, and are impacted by, climate change.

Implications of Climate Change for Rhode Island Wastewater Collection and Treatment Infrastructure
March 2017
This assessment for Rhode Island investigates how increasing storm intensities and flooding from climate change can impact wastewater treatment systems, including plants and pump stations throughout the state. The study presents the projected implications of climate change on Rhode Island’s nineteen public wastewater treatment facilities that are at risk of inundation, as by design they utilize low elevations, often in riverine or coastal floodplains. The RI Department of Environmental Management collaborated with the state’s Office of Housing and Community Development to evaluate these natural hazards, and begin integrating climate change considerations into wastewater system planning and design.

Medical Alert! Climate Change is Harming Our Health
March 15, 2017
From the newly formed Medical Society Consortium on Climate & Health, this report discusses urgent and compounding public health impacts from climate change. The Consortium is composed of physicians from 11 medical societies, representing over half of the nation’s doctors, who determined a need to share their concern about the health consequences of climate change with the public. The opening summary concludes with this: “In sum, we are sounding the alarm that the ultimate danger of climate change is that it poses a danger to the health of every American now and in the future.

San Francisco Climate and Health Adaptation Framework 2017

Developed by the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH), the Climate and Health Adaptation Framework is a compendium of the SFDPH’s 2010 Climate and Health Program’s work over the last several years. The framework identifies strategies to engage San Francisco community stakeholders on creating solutions to reduce health disparities and climate health impacts. The primary goals of the framework are to propose strategies to reduce the health burden of climate change, improve health equity, propose draft indicators to measure the severity of climate-related health risks and collaborate with stakeholders on health-related climate challenges.

Cambridge, Massachusetts Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment - Part 2

The City of Cambridge, Massachusetts has analyzed the climate risks projected for the area from sea level rise, storm surge, and resulting flooding. A summary report and two technical reports are provided which document the modeling of future climate driven sea level rise impacts, and the results of the vulnerability assessment for key assets and populations. This Part 2 report complements the Cambridge Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Part 1 that was published in 2015, which focuses on risks from increasing temperatures and precipitation.

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for the Upper Snake River Watershed Tribes

The Upper Snake River Tribes include the Burns Paiute Tribe, Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe, Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of the Fort Hall Reservation, and Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Reservation that together are represented by the Upper Snake River Tribes (USRT) Foundation. The USRT assessment focused on climate change vulnerabilities of their reservations in the 97,000 acre watershed in the Great Basin region - primarily in Idaho, with reservation lands extending into southwest Oregon and northeastern Nevada.

Avoiding Septic Shock: How Climate Change can cause Septic System Failure and Whether New England States are Prepared

This white paper discusses climate change impacts on septic systems in New England, and whether states in the region are prepared for these impacts. The paper provides a state-by-state analysis of septic system regulations in New England and discusses how these regulatory frameworks are not fully considering climate change impacts, especially groundwater table rise. It also identifies challenges in septic system regulation, and suggests recommendations and best practices for how states and municipalities can work to change laws, amend rules, or adopt new policies or incentives to better construct, manage, and regulate septic systems to be resilient to climate change.

Expanding vulnerability assessment for public lands: The social complement to ecological approaches

This report addresses how to measure the social vulnerability of rural populations in the context of public lands management, with an focus on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. Recognizing the need to better understand the climate vulnerabilities of those individuals and communities that depend upon resources managed on public lands, and the array of public land uses, federal agencies are asked to take into account both the needs and environmental impacts of human activities. The paper highlights existing approaches to social vulnerability assessments and presents design principles for holistic social-ecological vulnerability assessments.

Drought and Equity in California

Drought and Equity in California is the first statewide analysis of the impacts of the five-year and ongoing drought on California’s most vulnerable communities. Three major impacts of the drought are the focus of the report, including water supply shortages, drought charges and water affordability, and the drought impacts on salmon fisheries. The Pacific Institute finds that water shortages and price increases affected access to safe, affordable water for Californians, with the most severe impacts on several vulnerable populations.
