Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians Climate Change Program
The Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI) is a nonprofit organization representing 57 Northwest tribal governments from Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Southeast Alaska, Northern California and Western Montana. The ATNI Climate Change Program supports member Tribes with best practices to address and adapt to climate change, serving as a clearinghouse for, and coordinator of, tribal and intertribal efforts. ATNI prioritizes climate resilience strategies that protect tribal treaty rights and trust resources.

Lead with Listening: A Guidebook for Community Conversations on Climate Migration
In 2021, the Climigration Network, in partnership with a diverse team of researchers, released Lead with Listening: A Guidebook for Community Conversations on Climate Migration. The guidebook is a resource on climate migration and how to have effective dialogue about it. It addresses how various factors (e. g. , cultural, financial, and location) make conversations surrounding the topic of climate migration (also called “managed retreat” or “relocation,” among other terms) challenging.

New York State Climate Smart Community Coordinators
May 2021
Beginning in 2021, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) initiated the New York State Climate Leadership Coordinator Services. In 2022, the program name was updated to Climate Smart Communities (CSC) Coordinators. The program is a $3. 5-million initiative to select relevant organizations to serve as contractors to provide technical assistance to local municipalities on climate change adaptation and mitigation projects. Selected contractors will work in one of three territories in New York 一 Western, Eastern, and Downstate territories 一 and will help local governments and communities with “outreach, education, planning, capacity-building, and assistance with project implementation.

California’s Community Assistance for Climate Equity Program (CACE) provides capacity-building support to the state’s most under-resourced communities enabling them to build community driven leadership, partnerships, and grant writing knowledge and skills. The guide was produced under the Resilient Power Project, a joint project of CEG and the Meridian Institute, which work to accelerate the market development of resilient, clean energy solutions in low-income and underserved communities.

Communities of Oakland Respond to Emergencies - Oakland, California

Oakland, California’s Communities of Oakland Respond to Emergencies (CORE) program is a free educational and training program offered by the Oakland Fire Department that promotes the creation of emergency preparedness in the face of a disaster event. Offered mainly to individuals, neighborhood groups, and community-based organizations, CORE training focuses on teaching its students how to become more self-sufficient during emergency events for a period of up to 10 days following a disaster. Outreach to attract participants has focused on reaching lower-income communities, multilingual individuals, disabled residents, and other groups or people with access and functional needs. The overall purpose of the CORE program is to not only improve access to disaster response training, materials, and services, but also to reduce risks associated with current and future climate events. Since its founding, CORE has reached over 20,000 people throughout the Oakland community.

New York State (NYSERDA) Clean Energy Workforce Development Program
New York State’s Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) developed the Clean Energy Workforce Development Program, committing more than $100 million through 2025 to converting the State’s workforce to a cleaner, more resilient future. Working with partners across the State - including small businesses, local governments, frontline community leaders, and more - NYSERDA is focusing on funding five programs in the clean energy sector, including: (1) training in energy efficiency and clean technology; (2) on the job/site training; (3) providing internships to young adults; (4) offering training on building operations and maintenance; and (5) funding contractors that provide clean energy training.

According to the Energy Democracy Scorecard and Flipbook from the Emerald Cities Collaborative, “Energy Democracy” is defined as an ideal scenario where a frontline community “shifts completely away from an extractive economy, energy, and governance system to one that is regenerative, provides reparations, transforms the power structures, and creates new governance and ownership practices. ” The Energy Democracy Flipbook is designed to help frontline communities, such as low-income people of color, who are vulnerable to climate change to self-evaluate their communities’ energy economy condition.
