Sand Berm to Protect Del Monte Avenue in Monterey, California
The shoreline along southern Monterey Bay has historically been subject to strong surge during storm events. These surge conditions are predicted to worsen in the future due to climate change. Each year on November 1, the City of Monterey creates a temporary sand berm to provide flood protection for Del Monte Avenue and an adjacent bike path. Del Monte Avenue is a low-lying road that runs adjacent to the public beach. The berm is designed to reduce the likelihood that storm surge will inundate the road.

Economic Development Administration
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) was established under the Public Works and Economic Development Act of 1965 to generate jobs, help retain existing jobs, and stimulate industrial and commercial growth in economically-distressed areas of the US. EDA assistance is available to rural and urban areas experiencing high unemployment, low income, or other forms of severe economic distress. Based on locally- and regionally-developed priorities, EDA works in partnership with state and local governments, regional economic development districts, public and private nonprofit organizations, and Indian tribes.

Transportation During and After Hurricane Sandy (New York, New Jersey)

This report details the efforts New York and New Jersey took to prepare for impacts to the transportation system before Hurricane Sandy, and measures state and local entities took after the storm to restore service and to improve the system. Although the report does not talk about climate change specifically, the measures discussed could be used to increase the resilience of transportation systems to extreme weather and impacts of climate change. The report also details investments that state and local entities could make to increase the resilience of transportation system such as installing backup power for subway pumps, increasing the use of porous pavements in flood-prone areas, and locating generators and fuel sources above flood elevations or out of floodplains.

City of Lumberton, North Carolina: Lumberton, North Carolina Community Floodprint

The City of Lumberton is a small community in North Carolina built along the Lumber River. The river and its floodplains are an integral part of the landscape and Lumberton’s history and cultural and economic identity. Meanwhile, flooding has become more frequent and severe — requiring new adaptive flood mitigation solutions. In 2016, the community was devastated by Hurricane Matthew when the river flooded hundreds of homes and businesses. Just as the city was beginning to rebuild two years later, Hurricane Florence resulted in similar compounding damages.

Connecticut SB 7: An Act Concerning Climate Change Planning and Resiliency (Public Act 18-82)
June 6, 2018
SB 7 supports both climate change mitigation and adaptation measures for Connecticut, with directives that will help to prepare the state for climate impacts, primarily sea level rise. Connecticut’s statutory references to sea level rise will now reflect the Connecticut Institute for Resilience and Climate Adaptation’s (CIRCA) planning recommendation of nearly two feet by 2050. The legislation requires all state or federally-funded coastal infrastructure projects to take this new sea level rise projection into account when being planned and developed.

California SB 667 - Department of Water Resources: riverine and riparian stewardship improvements

SB 667 updates the California Water Code requiring the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) to establish a program to implement watershed-based riverine and riparian stewardship improvements through technical and financial assistance. The program will support projects that “reduce flood risk, restore and enhance fish populations and habitat, improve water quality, achieve climate change benefits, and in general ensure resilient ecological function within areas that include, but are not limited to, urban or urbanizing areas of the state.

The Vermont Flood Ready Atlas is an online mapping tool that offers community to watershed level data and visualizes the risk of localized flooding in Vermont. The Atlas identifies local watersheds and provides a view of the extent of natural flood protection provided by Vermont’s forests, wetlands, floodplains and river corridors.
