This report presents case studies of ten communities with experiences planning for and implementing climate change adaptation. The objective was to determine how the plans came to fruition, to learn how communities utilized these plans, and to extract pertinent lessons - with the intention of informing and inspiring other communities in their efforts to advance climate adaptation. Each highlights the key lessons learned in the process of moving from planning to implementation on climate adaptation.

Climate Change and Massachusetts Fish and Wildlife Reports
April 2010
In April 2010, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) and Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences published a series of three reports that address the impact of climate change on ecosystems and species. Funded by the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Doris Duke Foundation, the objective was to make "climate-smart" the State's existing State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP). The SWAP provides a roadmap for the conservation of wildlife and habitat in the state, including 22 critical habitat types and 257 priority animals in need of conservation action.

USACE Kivalina, Alaska Relocation Master Plan
June 2006
The purpose of this report in 2006 was to provide residents and stakeholders with the information necessary to make an informed decision regarding the best solution for the community of Kivalina facing the impacts of sea-level rise. This master plan from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) provides preliminary facility designs, costs, schedule, and a decision matrix for the community of Kivalina and its relocation stakeholders. The current state of the community is discussed in detail including the physical setting of the planning area, descriptions of 'living resources' such as endangered species and habitats, as well as the culture, history and demography of the community.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is a public benefit corporation created in 1975 under Article 8, Title 9 of the State Public Authorities Law through the reconstitution of the New York State Atomic and Space Development Authority. NYSERDA’s earliest efforts focused solely on research and development with the goal of reducing the State’s petroleum consumption. Today, NYSERDA’s aim is to help New York meet its energy goals: reducing energy consumption, promoting the use of renewable energy sources, and protecting the environment.

Convention on Biological Diversity
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was formulated in December 1993. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for "sustainable development". One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the CBD. This pact among the vast majority of the world's governments sets out commitments for maintaining the world's ecological systems as while pursuing economic development. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources.
