Shinnecock Indian Nation Climate Change Adaptation Plan

The Shinnecock Indian Nation, or the People of the Stony Shore, are located on the East End of Long Island adjacent to Southampton, New York with a territory of 800 acres of ancestral land. The Shinnecock are an Algonquian people who have forever lived along the shores of Eastern Long Island, whereas Federal recognition for this tribe was achieved as of October 1, 2010. The Shinnecock Reservation is at sea level, and this area is particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise, hurricanes, flooding, and shoreline erosion.

Maryland Forest Preservation Act of 2013

In April 2013, the Maryland General Assembly passed the Forest Preservation Act of 2013 (HB 706, approved by Governor Martin O’Malley on May 2, 2013 and effective October 1, 2013), which seeks to stop forest loss in the state and maintain the state’s existing 40 percent tree canopy cover by instituting a “No Net Forest Loss” policy. Instead of using regulations or maintenance requirements to prevent forest loss, the Act utilizes new and modified incentives for private landowners to conserve and preserve forestland.

Cleveland 2013 Climate Action Plan : Building Thriving and Healthy Neighborhoods

Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s Office of Sustainability convened a 50-member Climate Action Advisory Committee with representatives of leading organizations from the commercial, industrial, educational, government, and non-profit sectors to inform and create Cleveland's Climate Action Plan (CAP). 33 actions are outlined in the plan, within 6 focus areas including: Energy Efficiency and Green Building; Advanced and Renewable Energy; Sustainable Mobility; Waste Reduction and Resource Conservation; Land Use and Clean Water; and Community Engagement and Public Health.

Making Public Participation Legal

A publication of the National Civic League, this report offers legal frameworks and tools for state and local governments to use in order to enhance public participation within their communities. The paper presents the argument that the vast majority of public meetings are run with little citizen input, interaction, or deliberation. It includes model ordinances such as “A Model Municipal Public Participation at the Local Level,” “A Model State Public Participation,” and “A Model City Charter Language for Citizen Advisory Bodies.” These tools can be used to increase the scope and duration of public participation, garnering a greater range of collaboration and insight.

Cost-Efficient Adaptation in the North Atlantic

This report summarizes the work of two NOAA-funded graduate fellows research on community-level coastal flood management and climate change adaptation best practices throughout the North Atlantic region (Virginia to Maine). This year-long Sea Grant partnership with NOAA’s North Atlantic Regional Team (NART) has identified low-cost, innovative ways that coastal communities are addressing climate change and related coastal hazard management best practices at the local level. The team looked at studies, laws, policies, outreach tools, and infrastructure investments that were voluntarily adopted by 34 local municipalities, and developed a report to share this information more broadly.

Dane County, Wisconsin Climate Change and Emergency Preparedness Plan

In March of 2013, the Dane County Climate Change Action Council was created with the mission of ensuring that the Dane County government is better prepared for weather extremes brought on by global climate change. To support their mission and prepare this report, the Council facilitated an internal review of preparations and potential modifications to the county’s operations and capital investments. Based on the internal review, this report identifies potential vulnerabilities to climate change, and provides sector based adaptation strategies.

Pennsylvania Climate Impact Assessment - 2013 Update

This climate impact assessment from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) identifies current and anticipated climate change impacts for Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania's DEP is required to assess climate impacts every three years under the state's 2008 Climate Change Act. The first PA Climate Impact Assessment was released in 2009, and the next one was due in the spring of 2012 but was ultimately released in early October 2013. This report was prepared by the Pennsylvania State University’s Environment and Natural Resources Institute, using improved climate models, and includes updates on the state’s climate vulnerabilities.

District of Columbia Green Area Ratio - Zoning Regulations

The District of Columbia (Washington D. C. ) Green Area Ratio (GAR) is an environmental sustainability zoning regulation which sets requirements for landscape elements and site design to help reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality, and mitigate urban heat. The GAR sets minimum lot coverage standards for landscape and site design features to promote greater livability, ecological function, and climate adaptation in the urban environment. The GAR requirements provide a firm retention target and allow local governments to weight the elements they prefer in order to influence behavior, while providing some measure of flexibility for property owners.

New Hampshire Ecosystems and Wildlife Climate Change Adaptation Plan
