California’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan

California’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan, developed by Governor Newsom’s Forest Management Task Force in January 2021, provides a comprehensive framework of statewide strategies for forest management and community resilience. The Action Plan outlines four primary goals, which are buttressed by subsections and more specific “key actions. ” It not only presents mitigation approaches to reducing fire risk, but also embraces adaptation strategies that advance fire-resilient natural environments and bolster the infrastructure of threatened communities.

Taking Action on Climate Change and Building a More Resilient Connecticut for All: Phase I Report
January 2021
The Phase I report by the Connecticut Governor’s Council on Climate Change (GC3) -- Taking Action on Climate Change and Building a More Climate Resilient Connecticut for All -- released January 2021, contains a wide array of recommendations for improving Connecticut’s resilience to climate change that can be implemented by early 2022. An Adaptation and Resilience plan is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021 and will include recommendations on longer term policies. The report and forthcoming adaptation plan were called for in an executive order issued in September 2019.

Wisconsin Governor’s Task Force on Climate Change Report
December 2020
The Wisconsin Governor’s Task Force on Climate Change, established in 2019, included a broad array of stakeholders and conferred with people from across the state to identify, examine, and include strategies to reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions and increase resilience to climate change impacts. The task force issued its report in December 2020, which identifies 55 strategies across 9 sectors: Climate justice and equity; Energy; Transportation; Agriculture; Resilient Systems; Clean economy; Education; Food systems; and Forestry.

Maine Won’t Wait

In December 2020, the Maine Climate Council under Governor Janet Mill released Maine Won’t Wait, the four-year climate action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to build community and environmental resilience, and to spur transformational economic growth and opportunity. The Council agreed upon four climate action plan goals to reflect the diverse challenges posed by climate change: reduce Maine’s greenhouse gas emissions; avoid the impacts and costs of inaction; foster economic opportunity and prosperity; and advance equity through Maine’s Climate Response.

Climate and Health Adaptation Planning Guide for Michigan Communities
October 2020
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with Michigan State’s School of Planning, Design and Construction, released their Climate and Health Adaptation Planning Guide for Michigan Communities in October 2020. The purpose of the Guide is to help communities in Michigan and other Great Lakes states develop a climate and health adaptation plan and integrate climate and health concepts into existing initiatives. The Guide describes a step-by-step approach laying out how communities can develop a plan, and includes tools and guidance on how to implement each step.

Virginia Coastal Resilience Master Planning Framework
In October 2020, the Commonwealth of Virginia published the Virginia Coastal Resilience Master Planning Framework (Framework), which presents the Commonwealth's strategy for implementing coastal protection and adaptation measures to increase the flood resilience of coastal communities and economies. The Framework presents the core principles of the Commonwealth's approach to coastal adaptation and protection and describes how Virginia will develop and implement its first Coastal Resilience Master Plan (Master Plan) by the end of 2021.

Adaptokc: Adapting for a Healthy Future - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
July 2020
Adaptokc, the first sustainability plan for Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was adopted by the city’s Planning Commission and City Council in summer 2020. Adaptokc aims to strengthen Oklahoma City communities in the face of economic, social, and environmental challenges -- including climate change. The plan is divided up into four main sections: energy productivity, natural and built environment, air quality, and waste reduction. Among the initiatives proposed in the plan are increased energy efficiency and renewable energy use, mitigation of heat through development requirements, reduced transportation emissions, reduced waste generation, and strengthening of infrastructure against extreme weather.

Town of Princeville, North Carolina: Princeville Community Floodprint: Resilience Strategies for Greater Princeville, North Carolina

The Town of Princeville, North Carolina, located in the Tar River coastal floodplain along the U. S. eastern seaboard, has become increasingly vulnerable to extreme flooding. Princeville has endured multiple catastrophic flood events brought on by powerful Atlantic hurricanes, including Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which flooded approximately 80 percent of the town. Part of the residential community is in the process of relocating to higher ground with hazard mitigation funding support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Coastal Resilience Solutions for Downtown Boston and North End
September 2020
The “Coastal Resilience Solutions for Downtown Boston and the North End” is a $200 to $300 million dollar, 50-year plan to protect the Boston waterfront, including Downtown, the North End, and the eastern edge of the city’s West End. The plan aims to protect these neighborhoods from a hundred-year flood on top of a 40 inch rise in sea levels by late this century. The integrated plan relies on a combination of natural (green infrastructure) defenses, breakwaters, seawalls, harbor walks, and raised land to protect the waterfront and inland areas from increases in coastal flooding and sea level rise.
