Confronting Climate Change in the Great Lakes Region: Impacts on Our Communities and Ecosystems

This report released by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) and the Ecological Society of America examines the potential impacts of climate change upon the various ecosystems of the Great Lakes region. While somewhat dated, it is still highly relevant, and is cited in numerous subsequent impact studies. An updated Executive Summary was also released in 2005, which considered the findings of over 24 additional studies in the region. State summaries are also available on an interactive and comprehensive Union of Concerned Scientists website designed to represent the findings in this report.

There are more than 250 organizations involved that work together to restore local nature and improve the quality of life, by protecting the lands and waters of the region. Climate Justice Alliance
The Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) is a collaborative of more than 35 community-based and movement support organizations uniting frontline communities to forge a scalable and socio-economically just transition away from an extractive economy towards local living economies to address the root causes of climate change. CJA is rooted in Indigenous, African American, Latino, Asian Pacific Islander, and working-class white communities throughout the US. CJA seeks to strengthen relationships between community-based organizations, environmentalists, labor unions, food sovereignty/sustainable agriculture groups, and other sectors of society.

Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center
The Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center is one of nine regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CASCs) under the Department of the Interior (DOI) managed by the U. S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Climate Adaptation Science Center. CASCs were established under Secretarial Order No. 3289, which called for an expansion of the scope and geographic reach of the DOI's climate-science efforts. CASCs provide scientific information, tools and techniques that land, water, wildlife and cultural resource managers and other interested parties can apply to anticipate, monitor and adapt to climate and ecologically-driven responses at regional-to-local scales.

The Upper Midwest & Great Lakes Landscape Conservation Cooperative (UMGL LCC) is one of 21 LCCs established by Secretarial Order No. 3289, which focus on on-the-ground strategic conservation efforts at the landscape level. LCCs are management-science partnerships that inform integrated resource-management actions addressing climate change and other stressors within and across landscapes.

The Detroit Climate Action Collaborative (DCAC) is a project bringing together community groups, universities, state agencies, city leaders, environmental and public health organizations, and Detroit businesses and institutions. These constituents plan for how carbon pollution reductions and climate change preparedness projects will contribute to the resilient and responsible rebuilding of Detroit. DCAC was convened by the community environmental organization Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ).

GLISA is a member of NOAA's Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (RISA) program, which supports climate research for decision-makers and policy planners at a regional level. GLISA is a partnership between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, housed in the Graham Sustainability Institute's Climate Center.
