"Resolve, To Continue Evaluating Climate Change Adaptation Options for the State" - Maine SP0733, LD 1818

April 1, 2010

This 2010 resolution extended authorization for the climate-change planning activities of Maine's Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) stakeholder group (previously granted authority under "Resolve, To Evaluate Climate Change Adaptation Options for the State": Maine SPO 163). DEP was directed to continue to evaluate adaptation measures available to the people and businesses of Maine. DEP was required to report its progress on developing the state's adaptation plan to the joint standing committee of the Legislature with jurisdiction over natural resources matters by January 2011, with a final plan to the committee and the governor by the following year.

The Impacts of Climate Change on Connecticut Agriculture, Infrastructure, Natural Resources and Public Health

April 2010

In accordance with Section 7 of Public Act 08-09, the Governor's Steering Committee on Climate Change formed an Adaptation Subcommittee to assess the impacts of climate change in Connecticut on the following areas: (1) infrastructure, including buildings, roads, railroads, airports, dams, reservoirs, and sewage treatment and water filtration facilities; (2) natural resources and ecological habitats, including coastal and inland wetlands, forests and rivers; (3) public health; and (4) agriculture.

Preliminary Assessment of Rhode Island's Vulnerability to Climate Change and its Options for Adaptation Action - Summary

February 2010

This high-level assessment addresses climate change impacts and vulnerabilities in Rhode Island, and provides recommendations intended to support state and local planning efforts. The projected climate impacts on the state that are detailed in the report include warmer temperatures, extreme weather, worsening air quality, threats to municipal utilities, and biodiversity, coastal, economic and public health impacts.

Adaptation to Climate Change in Public Lands Management

This issue brief recommends a number of short- and long-term changes in federal land management policy to adapt to climate change.  Policy recommendations include the use of vulnerability assessments and strategic planning, development of effective monitoring systems, implementation of adaptive management and ecosystems management, coordinated research programs, and use of public lands planning and management processes to test adaptation strategies and tactics.

People and Nature Adapting to a Changing Climate: Charting Maine's Course

February 2010

In this report called for by the Maine Legislature, the state puts forth options for responding to the impacts of climate change.  The plan relies on the 2009 impact assessment report entitled Maine’s Climate Future: An Initial Assessment developed by the University of Maine.  The Department of Environmental Protection developed this plan through a stakeholder-based process to evaluate options and actions available to state businesses and people to prepare for “the most likely” impacts of climate change.

Tribal Climate Change Adaptation Options: A Review of the Scientific Literature

This report offers an overview of information from published scientific literature that identifies physical changes in the climate, and vulnerabilities of tribal resources to climate change. Adaptation approaches and strategies are described in response to these vulnerabilities, across ecosystems and other sectors such as agriculture, public health, and energy systems. While the paper is aimed at tribes in the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 10, the Pacific Northwest, much of the material is generalized for all audiences.
