The Climate Impacts Group (CIG) at the University of Washington and the Climate Leadership Initiative (CLI) (formerly at the University of Oregon) developed this focus sheet which summarizes two separate studies released in February 2009, detailing the projected impacts of climate change on Washington's environment and economy. Both reports demonstrate that without additional action to reduce carbon emissions, the severity and duration of the impacts due to climate change will be profound and will negatively affect nearly every part of Washington's economy.

In a world where industries are dependent on water, where water sustains our global economy, and climate change is likely to exacerbate already diminishing water supplies, few business have contemplated the risks of a diminishing water supply. This report covers global water trends and climate change, analyzes water-related business risks, and evaluates industry sector risks. Water-related risks discussed are specific to eight water-intensive industry sectors: high-tech, beverage, agriculture, electric power/energy, apparel, biotechnology/pharmaceutical, forest products, and metals/mining.

This is the full assessment report detailing the findings of the Climate Impacts Group's climate change impact assessment of Washington. The Washington Climate Change Impacts Assessment (WACCIA) involved developing updated climate change scenarios for the state and using these scenarios to assess the impacts of climate change on the following sectors: agriculture, coasts, energy, forests, human health, hydrology and water resources, salmon, and urban stormwater infrastructure. A chapter is dedicated to regional climate modeling.

The Rising Waters project aims to strengthen the preparedness and adaptive capacity of the Hudson River Estuary Watershed to meet the impacts of future climate change. To help local communities of the Hudson Valley to prepare for climate impacts, the Rising Waters project used scenario planning methodologies to educate participants on important aspects of complicated problems and build a shared conceptual framework for dialogue leading to potential solutions. The report overviews the key climate risks for the region, and describes the multi-stakeholder convening process, scenario planning, and resiliency framework development.

This report summarizes climate change trends, both globally and in selected urban areas. It analyzes the ways in which changes in climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and sea-level rise can impact or exacerbate chronic diseases and mental health issues in populations via pathways such as increases in heat exposure, extreme weather events and air pollution levels. Chapter 7 is devoted to heat exposure, highlighting temperature trends from 1980 to 2007 in 11 global cities, including Atlanta, and relating the exposures in both low and high-income countries to work productivity to show the causal link to climate change.

This three-page article reviews the ways that climate change mitigation activities and adaptation strategies may connect to the core work of land trusts - particularly land acquisition and stewardship. This paper provides a basic framework that land trusts can use to decide whether they might integrate climate considerations into their activities and general guidelines in order to do so. .

Utilizing a multi-model ensemble approach of downscaled climate model projections, hydrologic modeling, and water management models, this report presents results for changes in reservoir levels and snow pack in the Yakima River basin and resulting impacts to irrigated agriculture in the basin. The paper presents the analysis of hydrological conditions and how climate change is projected to impact water supply for water users with junior water rights and - in the extreme years - users with senior water rights throughout the basin.

This article, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, proposes a course of action for community-based adaptation to help communities better prepare for and respond to the health risks of climate change. The report is designed to engage stakeholders in a proactive problem-solving process to enhance preparedness for adaptation. Community-based adaptation is discussed as an approach to proactive implementation of programs and activities necessary to cope with the impacts of a changing climate on the health sector.

Executive Order 59, signed by Governor Kaine in 2007, established the Governor's Commission on Climate Change. The Commission was charged with creating a Climate Change Action Plan that would evaluate expected impacts of climate change on Virginia's natural resources, public health, and the economic impact on the industries of agriculture, forestry, tourism, and insurance. In addition the Plan was to identify strategies to prepare for the projected impacts of climate change on the state.
The Action Plan discusses the overall climate effects on natural systems, such as ecosystems and the state's primary fish stocks, and the effects on human health.
