These recommendations, formally released in September 2013, were developed by Delaware’s Sea Level Rise Advisory Committee and by staff of the Delaware Coastal Programs section of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Fifty-five recommendations were developed for adapting to sea level rise in the state, which target the 16 vulnerable resources noted of high or moderate concern in Delaware’s 2012 Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment. These recommendations focus on building the necessary capacity for Delaware agencies, local governments, businesses and individuals to plan for and put into place strategies for responding to sea level rise.

This US Army Corps of Engineers report details different measures for reducing coastal flooding and erosion risks, including natural or nature-based features (such as wetlands, dunes, and living shorelines), nonstructural interventions (such as land-use policies, building codes, and early warning systems), and structural measures (such as seawalls, levees, and breakwaters).

This article, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, quantifies present and future flood losses in the world’s largest 136 coastal cities. The researchers conclude that the world’s coastal cities cannot afford to ignore adaptation measures and policies in the face of increasing climate-related flood losses.

Effective July 28, 2013 under Washington Governor Jay Inslee, Engrossed Senate Bill 5603 established a Coastal Marine Advisory Council and a Marine Resources Advisory Council. The Coastal Marine Advisory Council was created to be a forum for discussing a variety of coastal water issues and to provide recommendations to the governor and legislature on coastal waters resource management issues. The Marine Resources Advisory Council was created to focus more specifically on issues of ocean acidification and provide recommendations to the governor and legislature of actions to reduce the effects and sources of ocean acidification.

Senate Bill 163 establishes a Coastal Risk and Hazards Commission for the State of New Hampshire. The commission is directed to recommend future legislation in order for coastal communities and the state to better prepare for rising sea levels and other weather-related hazards.

This report provides a summary of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission’s (HRPDC) Coastal Resiliency work for FY2012 and FY2013 with a focus on the impact of sea level rise on the region’s transportation infrastructure. HRPDC coastal resiliency and sea level programs have been funded in part by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program (VCZMP) and Virginia Sea Grant (VSG) as well as contributions from local governments in Hampton Roads.

The Hawaii Ocean Resources Management Plan (ORMP) is a statewide plan that presents the State’s ocean and coastal resource management priorities, and provides guidance to state agencies with responsibilities relating to marine and coastal zone management. The ORMP was updated in July of 2013, and again in 2020, and was developed under the Hawaii State Office of Planning Coastal Zone Management Program with the participation of county, state and federal agencies responsible for ocean and coastal resources, along with input from the community.

Led by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, the report was prepared by a panel of scientific experts in response to Governor Martin O’Malley’s Executive Order on Climate Change and “Coast Smart” Construction. The 21-member panel reviewed projections from Maryland’s 2008 Climate Action Plan and provided updated recommendations based on new scientific results that can better inform projections of sea level rise for the state.

Developed for the Town of Durham, New Hampshire, this report provides adaptation strategies to protect areas of the Town that are at risk of flooding due to sea level rise and other impacts from climate change. This chapter will be adopted as a subset of Durham’s existing Hazard Mitigation Plan, and will be recommended to be incorporated into the Master Plan.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) developed a tool that can assist communities affected by Hurricane Sandy in reducing vulnerability of transportation and other infrastructure to future sea-level rise and flood risk. The tool, which involves a set of maps showing floodplains under sea-level rise scenarios and an updated USACE Sea-Level Change calculator showing site-specific flood elevation data, helps communities understand the effects of sea-level rise on future flood risk and incorporate this information into planning and decision-making.
