The Louisiana Coastal Adaptation Toolkit provides adaptation resources that communities can use to address climate impacts on coastal Louisiana. This toolkit highlights adaptation strategies, and offers guidance on how to use certain practices or policy strategies in concert with the natural environment of Louisiana’s coast to foster adaptation. In addition, the toolkit contains links to resources on each of the coastal impacts covered in this document, and funding options to implement these adaptation strategies.

The County of Kaua'i, Hawaii passed a Shoreline Setback Ordinance (effective December 5, 2014) that strengthens the county's shoreline setback requirements. The purpose of the updated bill is to "protect life and property, ensure the longevity and integrity of Kauai’s coastal and beach resources and strengthen current shoreline setback requirements by incorporating science-based erosion rates established in the Kauai Coastal Erosion Study, and current coastal hazard mitigation best practices and strategies.

The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC), on behalf of the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, has administered the Regional Climate Action Plan (RCAP) 2014 Municipal Implementation Survey, compiling climate-related ordinances, resolutions, regulations and administrative policy information from the 108 municipalities in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach Counties, Florida. The data collected from this survey will allow the Compact and ISC to create a database on the Compact’s official website highlighting municipal work in mitigating and adapting to climate change impacts, and will allow for peer-to-peer knowledge and resource sharing.

This report from the Union of Concerned Scientists describes the threat of tidal flooding in the East Coast and Gulf regions and offers steps that communities can take to adapt. The report makes the case that tidal flooding, currently just considered a nuisance, could become a daily or weekly occurrence, redefining how and where people along the coast “live, work, play, and move through their daily lives. " Data was collected in 52 locations to provide projections for sea level rise and tidal flooding in the region until 2045.

CA A.B. 2516 directs the creation of a Planning for Sea Level Rise Database by the California Natural Resources Agency in collaboration with the Ocean Protection Council, to describe the steps being taken throughout the state to prepare for, and adapt to, sea level rise. This bill requires the database to be created by January 1, 2016, updated biannually, and posted online.

From the Recurrent Flooding Sub-Panel of Virginia’s Secure Commonwealth Panel, this draft report provides recommendations on actions Virginia can take to prepare for sea level rise and increased flooding as caused by climate change. This comprehensive report also offers analysis of which tools, authorities, initiatives and resources already exist, what actions can be taken, and how to coordinate it all into a united effort to adapt to these impacts.

Climate Central has launched the Surging Seas Risk Finder tool for the state of Maryland, along with this high-level summary report of findings on coastal flooding risk and sea level rise impacts for the state. The report presents some of the major categories and highlights, with a focus on exposure below 5 and 9 feet. The Surging Seas Risk Finder presents thousands of combinations of analysis results by geography, water level, and variable. The tool has much more detailed and localized findings for Maryland - accessible via: http://sealevel.

The Low Impact Development (LID) Manual for Coastal South Carolina project is supported by years of outreach and research led by the South Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERRS) and South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium. The project includes key leaders in the area that serve on the LID Manual Advisory Committee, and incorporates public trainings/meetings throughout the process. The final product will be a guidance document defined and vetted by end users.

The California State Assembly Select Committee on Sea Level Rise and the California Economy was established in 2013 to thoroughly review the challenges ahead in addressing the impacts of sea level rise on California. The Select Committee held four hearings featuring testimony from scientists and industry leaders about potential impacts from sea level rise to the state’s economy and infrastructure. Topics included projected impacts on coastal agriculture, the fishing and aquaculture industry, tourism, ports, roads and bridges, and water and power infrastructure.
